Post Posted: Sat Aug 11, 2007 2:12 am — Post subject: Guild info - Reteltee interview

This Sunday at 2pm Cavern time (9pm GMT) I will be conduction a 2 hour live interview with Reteltee (guild advisor to the DRC) on URU Radio.

http://radio.kahstudios.com/

Please post any questions you want to ask him on the website's forums, at http://radio.kahstudios.com/ otherwise your question might not get asked!

I will try to be in the cavern in the URU Radio hood throughout the show, so if enough people turn up, I will hold a live Q&A session on air with Reteltee live from the Cavern !

Exciting stuff, so if you want some insight into the DRC's new Guild advisor, I suggest you post your questions, listen to the show, and log into live for the Q&A !

I will not be able to attend the show. Will either a recording or a transcript be posted at your website?

Well I think I joined your forum way back when but don't remember my login details. I also noticed that there are 2 choices for listening. I don't have either application. What would you recommend?

This doesn't make any sense. The two times this "Reteltee" guy has showed up in the cavern, he wants to use voice chat, so half the people there couldn't hear him. Now he's doing an interview, but it's live internet radio. And he's supposed to be a guild coordinator?

Maybe he's just trying to be more personable?

But, yeah, it would be nice if he used the same sort of communication routes the majority of the players use.

I see two sides of this: voice being more personable and easier for Reteltee (I recall he mentioned he was a slow typer) and on the other hand voice making archiving (and thus catching up afterwards) difficult to impossible. I suggest volunteer speech-to-text transcribers jump in when Reteltee voices in game.
I'd like to add one more downside to voicing that's often forgotten: If English isn't your first language, understanding voice can be very difficult. I have heard from a lot of folks who are able to understand written English well enough that they hardly understand what's said with voice.

I would say that even if English [is]is[/i] your first language, understanding voice chat can be difficult if their microphone isn't any good, or the connection is poor or they have a strong accent you're not used to!

I never liked voice anything (podcasts, voice chat, etc.) since well before Uru was around. Voice is harder to understand even for native speakers of a language (you'd marvel at how many English-talking people don't buy DVDs if they don't have subtitles), is harder to archive for the future, needs to be transcribed for the hearing impaired, and forces you to follow it at its own speed, which is usually much slower than needed: a one-hour interview, once transcribed, can very well take only 10 minutes to read, but it's still one hour to listen. Not to mention that, with a decent chat tab size, you can follow up to 10 persons writing at once, while two persons can't speak at the same time without overlapping.

Voice chat might be easier for Reteltee to use than text, but it makes it harder on everyone else that wants to catch up afterwards. It would IMHO be sensible if, at least for guild stuff, he'd stick to typing.

the only reteltee i have been too he did his Q&A in voice chat, that I relayed via typing. You just need someone really fast on the keys to relay voice. Just makes it more difficult that's all Smile

Still looking for more questions Smile At this rate I've got free reign over him.

If you need a password reset or anything on my forums pm me here or msg me on my msn at sam.byard (at) msn (dot) com and I can reset it manually Smile

Well, when "Reteltee" can communicate with me the same way I communicate with everyone else in the game, he can apply to be my guild coordinator. Smile

I'm actually a fan of voice chat, even though I don't have a mic hooked up. It would definitely be a good idea for him to use text (or pre-arrange a speech-to-text relayer) during events though.

I used to dislike hearing voice chat in the cavern - it just sounded like people talking into microphones. Then I overheard a group in the Watcher's Pub talking about voice chat and how it's better with EAX enabled. So I turned it on.
Wow, is it better. People no longer sound like they're sitting at home talking into a microphone - the sound feels like it's coming from their avatar, in the world. The volume fades with distance and moves between speakers you turn or move (great with headphones), and the acoustics of the location are taken into effect (echo echo echo). Suddenly what was once an immersion-killer for me became an immersion-enhancer. Maybe I'll hook up a mic of my own some day.

But I've wandered. Short answer - voice chat is cool for talking normally, but let's stick with text for the more official stuff.
