I recently came across the notice about the closure of Uru Online (somewhat a repeat of the closure of Uru Live). I wished to pass some thoughts on to Cyan, but did not know how. I emailed GameTap and they suggested this was the place. Below is a copy of the email I sent:

--------------------------------------

Subject: End of Uru Live again and the Uru sim in Second Life

Hi, I was sorry to hear that Uru Live has ended again after its second
attempt. I really hoped it would work out.

However since I operate in Second Life, it was nice to see the Uru sim
there. Perhaps there is a way you could move forward within the Second
Life platform? Especially with the future prospects for OpenLife to
Mainland linkup and with other private server states. I for one would
like to see a set of Uru sims there again.

It wouldnt be hard to recreate the clothing etc, to sell Dni relics in
insim stores, or even have residents rent out plots on the sims and live
in Dni environments. I know its not exactly what you wanted, but I should
like to think that the Spirit of Uru could continue on in some way, and
that seemed a way forward in my mind.

Yours, a fan since Myst.

------------------------------------

I don't know that fans would agree or disagree with my thoughts. They're not right or wrong as such; just a hope that in some way the spirit of Uru could live on; and the smile that came to my face when I came across the Uru Sim in Second Life, would be seen on the faces of others.

Having Uru-related stuff in SL would be fun and if people want to do it, that's great, but Cyan's real official Uru should not be there. The SL world is completely different from the D'niverse and it would not work. Any IC-ness there was would disappear.

Though I like SL very much and find it very entertaining it is not a place for Uru to evolve to. Could Uru use some of the elements of SL? I think so. No, not the open raunch that is sometimes unavoidable when you are out exploring. But perhaps if it is one of the only ways to fund the expansion of the restoration then we might put up with some corporate sponsership. I have been thinking about the past year and how the "story" unflolded and I think perhaps Cyan was trying to tell us very subltly that if other income streams were not found then the cavern would close, ie the debate started by Catherine about advertising. The last episode, "exodus" all the DRC leave to look for fianancing. I think we should have realized then that the jig was up and unless some miracle happened the cavern would close. Obviously the subscripttion base generated by the game did not support it's continued existance in Gametap's financial model. So perhaps if some of SL's use of corporate support had been allowed we might again have a cavern to meet and dance in again. Just some random musings.

I think it'd be really fun to have the DRC people go onto secondlife, and have them hang out in chat-rooms like real people. I don't mean a big group of them walk around secondlife with special avatars. I mean like if they really were people and wanted to hang out.

It would also be cool to bump into them on the surface, maybe in shops. Wink
It's like you go to the mall and bump into some woman, and you say "sorry" and then continue on your way, and then you realize who it is, a few seconds later... Marie Sutherland! OMG that would be so good. Then you catch up with her, and talk about the cavern. Shocked That would be SOOOO good. Shocked

I just had another idea, and it's probably just as crazy as the one that I had before. What if, a sizable amount of fans pulled together for an island? Island one looks an awful lot like Myst/Relto. I'd normally be annoyed, but it's probably counter-productive. We don't know when URU will come back, but what if we made some sort of conspicuous presence there? What if we told those that ask us what's going on, and what if we turn our little areas into the most happening spots in Second Life? When URU finally is reborn, maybe we will have earned us a bigger fan base?

I recently tried Second Life again for the second time. I teleported directly to "Bevin", so I avoided my unpleasant experience that I had last time. I still crashed trying to customize, so I gave up on that. I was still incredibly confused, I tried to make something, which is what SL tells me I should do. I was grateful that Bevin was unoccupied. It looks like without land you are completely out in the open, unless you find sanctuary. It's hard finding a private corner where a pleb can build something. I noticed what a great job was done on the Bevin. It was an excellent reproduction considering what one had to work with. It occured to me that with the talent of all our Uruvians, we could create a sanctuary where others could become familiar with our community, and share our vision for a ressurected cavern.

I still don't like SL's model. If URU live had been run like SL, then we all would have probably spent about $10,000 a piece on it. I guess, URU would have been well funded, then, but it seems to me that maybe there is a happy medium between the two. What about making fake merchandise in URU that gets us real world credit to support URU? I hate the though of supporting the system, and paying ridiculous amounts of real money to get started, but maybe it just could have its trade-offs. (I used to enjoy that show) I know that others have found a home there. Perhaps to those that do enjoy SL, it could be beneficial.

I still haven't found my pals yet, though. Bevin & Relto were both abandoned when I visited it. I hope to see them some time.

Just a (crazy) thought

I think that Cyan worlds should try and run URU it's self. I mean, URU is a popular game, it makes and lot of money and ther are a lot of paid explorers all over the world. Second life is good but, URU is much much BETTER.

well, when uru was last canceled, we had the X pacs. i dont se any reason for that to end. a couple more x packs. its no uru live, but by enabling voice chat, it could be a good ride. This time though it needs to close up with the xpacs. Another x-pack with current content, and the one final pack that wraps this story up, let people have some closure, and happy memories. An open ending I don’t care, but all the threads needs to be woven into something, to let people (me at least) have some closure. I suppose you can always enable multi player in the expansion, too. but give UrU a fitting end. colaps the cave, free the bahro, light the whole place up, its really up to cyan. but this limbo existence, of half existen is really not fitting, for such a great universe, and grand concept. i love uru, so i want it to have an end like a cherry blossom, let uru fall with beuty, and not wither away.

lars,
fan since 1993
