Post Posted: Sun May 28, 2006 5:33 am — Post subject: arms and hands that could pick things up. (spoilers)

I would love to see Cyan include arms and hands that could pick things up. I would have loved to bend down and pick up the rocks in the slave prison on Teledahn and placed them on the pressure sensitive pads, the way we all would in real life. The wicker baskets or tables used as a bridge in Eder Gira, to pick them up and place them in position would have been nice. I found kicking things around to get them in place to be rather behind the times for such a well thought out game.

We could carry things from one age to another to complete a puzzle in that second age (something like the fireflies between Eder Kemo and Eder Gira). Or bring plant and (or) animal life from one age to another turning a wasteland into a garden, or garden into a wasteland.

Maybe a back pack to hold a sensible number of small objects picked up and placed in it along the way.

But most of all to pick up those darn construction cones and toss them over the cliffs! Just joking.

That was one of the choices in the survey. We'll find out soon enough how many people included it in their five.

I also like the idea of mandible hands. The only objection I have is to hands being visible in first person, which would make it feel too much like an RPG or shooter.

I would assume the hands would only be visable when you are holding somthing...unless that is you dont want to see your hands at all? What, would you rather do it the cheap way and have things hover in front of your face when you pick them up (ala Half Life 2)?

*cough* http://www.hlcomic.com/index.php?date=2005-05-10 *cough*

that is soooo realistic!
no seriously i dont care if it has to float in the air so no one has to complain of seeing hands and the game to look too much of a shooter.

Crash

I love the link! Great job he-he!

I would hope the people at Cyan can do better then that.

Was that really Half Life 2? I never played it, People said had such great graphics.

The physics were great. The graphics weren't anything special. They were decent.

But having a basket float in front of your head is no different from hovering across the ground with no feet.

it is different! because if something is floating in front of you you'll end up noticing you are not using your hands, but about the feet, people rarely look down and think "where the hell are my feet?" also we are used to games not showing the feet, so no one notices.

anyways as long as i can hold something im happy, be it through telekinesis or hands.

I'd like somehting like Theif 3/Riddick, with a pseudo-third person headcam.
I could make a short demo to demonstrate what I mean *Pulls out Torque*

Part from the visual enhancement first thing you get amazed
and having fun with in half-life2 is that u can pick up stuff
then either set them down or throw them.
I laughed so loud when I guard forced me to pick up a sodacan
and throw it into a dumpster, then he walked away laughing.
They dont use the technic to much during the game,
but from the experiance if you implement also seeing the hands
holding the item while in first person view could make it a bit
more realistic. But I would be fine if as is in halflife2 hovering
infront of you, because the complexity to puzzles, funfactor and interactivity
using this kind of thing within the myst world would
greatly enhance the whole game.
This with all the previous technics you only begun
to experiment with would make awsome worlds to interact with,
not to mention the puzzles and machinery etc that can be realised.
As ex the touch experiment done in myst4 where you can knock
on a surface and hear its density and sound.
Hope you will see that all this compined and numerous other
technics would create a whole new spectra of enjoyment for us
players.
