Embarassed

I am ashamed to admit that my faith that MOOS has flagged. I want it back so badly that the thought that it my not happen has me worrying. I've got a killer headache right now, so my wording is not as precise as I'd like. I'm not complaining, I'm worried.

Any encouraging words are welcome. I want to be hopeful, I just need to find my faith that it will occur. The silence from the powers that be, and the interview from Rand has knocked the wind out my (hopeful) sails.

Thank you. And Cyan, if you are reading, I really miss the MOUL community (y'all at Cyan, too) and want to thank you for letting us share the Cavern.

Actually, I heard through the grape vine that their are some still working on their own with code to get our Open Source Uru baby back to us. Rolling Eyes That your actually not allowed to worry until we enter summer time, officially. Shocked
Summer starts June 21 this year, so until then, no worries. Very Happy
Cool Roll Call and other forum activities indicates the Uru Community still is quite active, ready and waiting.
The guilds and orgs are Age building. Explorers are getting their blender skills up to snuff as I type.
I have an Age building thread here to help encourage others and provide information of things to try and urls to visit.

http://mystonline.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17301

It is fairly new and a work in progress. As more explorers post I think it wll offer more and more to those on the fence with Age stories, puzzle logic, music, sounds, etc...

P.S. Your not alone in this moment of doubts. Hopefully others will post to let ya know they care and feel the same to at times too.

I'm quoting myself from another thread:

Quote:

My opinion and mine only....If Cyan (Rand) were going to give up on URU Open Source...We (And I speak widely) would be the first to know...He had, and still has the original heart of the game and appreciates each and everyone of us for the years of sticking with, around, and through all the tough times. We would be the very first to know if the future was to continue his dream or move on. I respect him for his dream ( And thank him for the opportunity to be a part of it all ) and I think he respects us for our dream as well....

All are angst in the waiting scenario...No one likes it...but maybe....when you open that door... Shocked

I'm with you. I was actually talking about this yesterday to my kids. I'm starting feel the silence is Cyan not knowing how to break the bad news to us. I wish someone from there would come forward and say something....

Being an analytical sort, and not being hopeful just to be hopeful - let me see what I can say about it.

- If you think about it - why would Cyan not do this? Admittedly, Rand Miller seemed to be wafflling a bit in the last interview (my opinion) but let's think about this. The announcement was published all over the internet, including places such as massively, and gamasutra. If you look at the history of Uru - from a financial perspective it's always been a bad thing. But - they love their world, and this is way to get their world out, and their name out there. I can't see a downside to this.

- This can be done if Cyan does well, or it does very badly. Let's say Cyan is still struggling, or maybe Myst for the iPhone sold really well, and they are getting money. Let's say that for either of those reasons, the company can't devote much in the way of resources to open source. But - remember Chogon told us that there are some people who are not working at Cyan anymore who want to help out with the open source release of Uru. That's good. You have people who can do it, and it's not dependent on the state of Cyan as a company. Either iMyst turns out great or not so great - you can still do this.

- It leaves a lasting legacy. I think this is the most important factor. Let's think about this. Does Cyan want to be known as the company that blew all their money on an MMO that didn't make it, twice (said charitably, could be more). Wouldn't it be better to be able to say this - Uru didn't make money (financial reasons, ahead of its time, all kinds of other reasons, pick one), but Uru was so well loved that Cyan worked with fans to put it out into the world. And, after Cyan did that - look what happened? This wasn't just a failed game - it was something that tapped an unmet need in MMO land. It was something that players just could not let go. Cyan was onto something, and they will be remembered for that. The success of Cyan was not a one time fluke.

- User generated content is hot. Rzyom did it but the popular one going on now is City of Heroes. People really, really want to be able to have some input into their MMO worlds.

See - there are reasons to think this will happen!

I think Rusty is right.

I know a Cyan silence is usually a bad thing for Uru. That might be the case now. BUT... there is another side to Cyan's silence. Remember we did not hear from Cyan before Uru Live. We did not hear from Cyan before D'mala. So, the argument can be made they are also quite before some good things happen.

I am still puzzled by those that wait for others to make a Myst/Uru virtual world reappear. I can understand some not liking the loneliness of ULM or UAM and not wanting to spend time in that version of Uru. But, there are things one can do to be contributing to a Myst-Uru return.

The optimum choice is of course to learn to build ages for a coming MOOS. That is no small mountain to climb. Creating tables, chairs, Rube Goldberg machines and stuff are smaller mountains. Then there are the virtual worlds with Myst-Uru replications where fans are re-building their versions of Myst-Uru places. Second Life (SL) has 3 replications one can visit and party in. THERE has one that just won an award. Then there are the Myst-Uru STYLE places where Uru fans are creating non-replication places using a Myst style and philosophy. I know two of those in SL that are in progress as I write. Puzzle Island is a known but secret (well the details) Myst style build in progress. Another, which I have great hope for, I had to promise not to say anything about until the owners are ready to open it. Then there are people gathering to take D'ni language lessons, clothes making classes and building classes. (In SL it is Guild of Builders). There are others learning to push the limits of virtual world technology, ECR&D. I am almost finished with my first house. I just finished programing a light switch/dimmer and window tint controller for it. I am teaching some how to make textures (I'm not that good but I can teach the basics) and others SL programming.

All of these things increase ones knowledge about building and much of what one learns will be transferable to MOOS age building. As one learns they can be with friends. They can see and interact with each other and lessons and education in SL are way ahead of what one can find in the forums. There are reasons M.I.T, Princeton, Harvard and other schools are in virtual worlds.

While these current Myst-Uru ... builds ... I guess is the best term, are definitely NOT Uru, they will do until people can return to the MOOS Cavern. It certainly is better than sitting around worrying.

And if the worst happens and the community does not get open source (I believe we will - I just don't know how usable it will be) then there is a community that will rebuild Uru just as refugees fleeing RL countries have rebuilt their homes in new countries. Find a place make a home... you can always move later.

I'm also with Rusty. Obviously Myst has been top priority for Cyan... a chance to gain some much-needed profit. Now that Myst is (almost) done, I guess we'll hear something about Uru soon.

A small correction: The builds in There aim to be Myst style places rather than replications. But we do work hard to try to make them feel like a home from home.

And as Nalates said, it is a good way to learn some basics of modelling, to experiment with structures and even to look at multi-player possibilities.

Back to topic: I'm really looking forward to seeing Myst out, and then to meeting up with you all in the Cavern. It'll be a new chapter for me personally: being able to work as a Maintainer with others, no longer inspecting new ages alone and only socialising on a forum.

Hi all,

Sorry for the lapse in communication. I (we) have been a little busy (with Myst for the iPhone).

The plans for opening the sources for UruLive is still intact. Unfortunately the schedule for it has been effected. Besides myself being busy with Myst, the ex-Cyan programmers that were going to help also had greater demands from their 'real' jobs.

So, I am trying to get the initial team together again and find out what has yet to be done and how much time and effort it will take to achieve that. I'll let you know as soon as I do.

Thanks,
Chogon

Thanks for the update, Chogon! The other programmers being busy with their jobs is understandable, and we wouldn't want to make them spend more time on this with the consequence of losing their job...

The way I see it, it's slightly better if it's slightly slower work. If there's a pre-release testing like with MOUL, if it's less worked on over a long period of time, it would be easier to track down bugs, solve them, and see the effect of solving it on gameplay/stability of all the Ages.

Basically, this is one of those possible "quality over quantity" moments.
