Post Posted: Sun Jun 14, 2009 7:26 pm — Post subject: D'ni Food?

I have yet to find a notebook in some evidence in the game of what the D'ni ate, their main dishes, desserts, delicacies. So here's the question, what did they eat? Did they grow some sort of wacky underground food or take it from other Ages? The second one seems more likely to me.

The latter. There's not a lot known about the primary diets etc, but we do know the shrooms in Teledahn were a delicacy, made somehow or another.. and Er'cana was a grain age at one point to harvest/process grain, before Kadish bought it and repurposed it into whatever. The harvester in there was literally a harvester.

The thing is the D'ni linked to other ages, and thus had no lack of farmable land for crops.. and probably livestock too (they ate meat too if memory serves)

The actual specifics though, uhm, ask others. My guess is there was some sort of stratification of food quality depending on position and wealth.. sure you'd get food everywhere but only some people who could afford servants etc would have the high class delicacies also possible from only a few ages.

BoT mentions something called "chor bahkh", which is a meatroll. Also there is "ikhah nijuhets" but I forgot what that was.

Just one correction to Gondar's explanation. Kadish never bought Er'cana. It was and is a granary Age used to care for the lake algae.

The tel-okh-doo'shol-tahn-tee probably took care of everybody's food needs.

I seem to recall there being a grain growing age in Myst #0 from Dark Horse Comics. Razz

In the Riven D'ni village, they had a public oven
where they cooked their fish.

I thought it was only the wealthy that owned book and the class called the Elite owned private libraries. So that suggests the Elite had the most variety and higher quality. The wealthy classes below the Elite usually owned only one or more books. Maybe those books were plentiful ages? But then that leaves the poorer classes which had no books. I can't image a rich person selling their food to the poor...how did they eat then?

I imagine the non-D'ni ate whatever was int heir ages- EG, the riven people.

I think, though, that the Guild of Caterers probably imported a lot of food from various ages, making it available to people who couldn't own books. I'm not sure if they just served the wealthy or if, like many guilds, they existed for the general benefit of of their culture.

In other words, I suspect the GoC handled imports.
