I know its an old debate but today i discover this:

and underneath of the photo is written this:
"each flows ink"
It is a solution to the old Riven journal puzzles Shocked
the link is here:

The animal is called Golden beetle and Gehn use it to produce ink.....
I wonder, is this the only source?[/img]

No. It is the source Gehn used on Riven, because Atrus had cut off his access to D'ni, and the supplies there. We don't know for certain, but an Age called 'Venalem' may have had something to do with the Ink-making process, due to the 'lem' part of its name; 'lem' being the D'ni work for 'ink'.

It's probable that similar beetles were used by the D'ni since they show up in Ayoheek and Gehn would have had at least some idea of how ink was made since he was apprenticed into the guild of inkmakers (if only briefly). He also was given to simply copying passages of other descriptive books when Writing, so he would have copied lines from an inkmaker age to include the beetles in Riven.

There may, of course, have been other sources, we really don't know very much about the inkmaking process.

So, wait a minute.. you could actually write an Age, and add in descriptive lines that would cause it to contain all the tools you'd need to create blank books and the ink to write in them?

THAT is fascinating, and it never occurred to me!

As I recall, there were plans from Cyan to create an Age that supposedly supplied the Ink. There were even artists' drawings of it. I think there were supposed to be giant plants that created bulbs full of Ink that the D'ni would harvest.

Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of that Age. Could anyone else find it?

Shorah TOOO,

Sounds like you're probably thinking of the Age mentioned by DLordofTime/Kath above. You can see concept art for Venalem here.

I never heard of this. What are the old Riven journal puzzles?

Shorah Rik,

The Riven Journals were an online teaser/prequel to the release of Riven back in the day. At the time, they were pretty cool (considering Flash wasn't yet around) but they disappeared from the internet at some point in the interim. RIUM+ restored them several years ago but I can't tell if they are working anymore (I'll have to check from home to know for sure). You can at least read all about them at his site.

Let us know it the journals themselves work for you.

Thanks, Ainia. I was able to link to RIUM+ site and read about the journals, but can't get them started. I can't even open the page anymore after the first time. I will try later with Firefox.

EDIT. Tried again with Firefox, but the links didn't work. It was cool to read about it though.

I checked the concept art of Venalem , guess what I seen with my poor eyesight? Very Happy For me I saw an age we already have,a very cold age, underwater, lots of pods laying around. I am believing that the name was changed . Smile According to the description the pod was used for habitat. interesting?

Yeah... I also think the shape of it was very close to 'water Ahnonay', too.

Doubtful. The DRC Site from 2003 has separate entries for Venalem and Dereno.

I wrote to RIUM+ about the broken links for the Riven Journal Puzzles. This is his reply:

RIUM+ wrote:

For now at least the Riven Journals are broken. My server configuration changed with a PHP upgrade and I haven't had time to upgrade the backend code (Fun fact! They were originally coded in PHP2, then migrated to a beta version of PHP3 during development... we're now on PHP5 and there's been some big changes to the language since then, heh). The issue is with cookie handling, so anything that sets or reads your cookie will fail & result in a blank screen... and the game sets a cookie the moment you start playing it so people can't even start. I have no idea when I'll get around to fixing this because despite driving a DeLorean, time is something I'm always short on.

For now, you can bypass the initial cookie setting by going straight to http://journals.riumplus.com/temple.html. This will let you play all the puzzles, though it'll go blank again when you solve a puzzle in which case you can just go back to try another puzzle. The big final reward and the easter eggs won't be accessible though since you can only get to them once you've solved all the puzzles. You'll need Java to play the actual puzzles, and a browser (or just a browser plugin) that plays .wav files if you want to hear the background music. Everything else has been adapted from Internet Explorer 3/Netscape Navigator 2 code to still work with modern browsers.

If the above link doesn't work, try this: http://journals.riumplus.com/temple.html

They're nothing alike other than cold and wet.

Post Posted: Fri Mar 01, 2013 8:19 pm — Post subject: Venalem thread

Shorah again,

For those interested in Venalem, there is a thread here that had an interesting discussion about the Age and its ink harvesting operations. You can even visit denDwaler's recreation of the harvester on the fan Age Rell-too. As janaba1's photos toward the end of the MOULa thread show, it's quite a sight. You can even go swimming and see it up close and personal. Very Happy And for the truly adventurous at heart, you can explore each of Rell-Too's incarnations by downloading each here (Note: I see that most of the early ones are no longer available there, but some can still be found in the GoW thread posts). It's truly fascinating to see the collaborative work done on this Age by many of our own Writers. The harvester was added toward the end of Rell-Too's restoration.

So glad to see that RIUM+ is working on getting those Riven journals back in working condition! Many thanks to you Rik for checking with him about this, and then passing on the news to the rest of us!
