Hi all,

We have just uploaded Myst Free for the iPhone and iPod Touch to Apple for review. Hopefully, it should be available in the iTunes App Store in a week or two.

Myst Free, as the name implies, is a free version of Myst. It only includes Myst Island and should give someone who has an iPhone or iPod Touch a chance to try Myst and get the "gist" of Myst before buying. It should also give people who have never heard of or experienced Myst an easy entrance into the Myst universe.

Thanks,
Chogon

Sounds like it could be a good move. Get your flagship's iconic area, Myst, out there and entice others to buy it with the shiny panels on the other books. Those panels do provide excellent teaser material.

I think it will be a good thing, if anyone who has not tried Myst before has been on the fence about buying the app, they can now get a taste, without paying, and if it's intriguing (and it definitely is! Laughing ) then they will want to see more!

Most of the free versions of a larger games are refered to as Free *insert name* or with the Free at the end after the name. This is just keeping things consistant.

Honestly, Apple really needs to come up with a demo system.

I suppose it's a good thing it's the static Myst island, rather than the 3D one, or people would have no reason to buy the full version. Razz

I think you missed the point of what Myst Free does. It only allows the player to explore the island itself and none of the other ages (Stoneship, Channelwood, Mechanical, etc). As far as the lack of 3D, (correct me if I'm wrong) I don't believe the full version is in 3D (ala realMyst). Even if there were the 3D issue though, I think they'd be tempted to buy the full version from their lack of ability to go anywhere else. Pretty clever marketing gimmick. Very Happy

Some thoughts:

-Let them see the linking panels but not be able to go through them. When they click on the linking panel, move to a nice-looking screen that says, "(Name of Age) not available in MystFree", with an image of the most visually striking possible view of the age they're not allowed to visit, and a "back" button.

It'd provide them a tantalizing but all-too-limited glimpse of everything they can't do in the demo, and make it obvious to them why they should get the full version.

I think that'd be effective.

No, I did not miss any point. I know quite well what Myst Free is supposed to be. The only person missing any point here is you, which is, you miss the point of my post.

I have the full version of iPhone Myst, so I know what that is too.

In that case, you are proposing that people won't buy the full version of iMyst if they can get irealMyst Island for free without the rest of irealMyst? That's incredible enough to think the point was missed.

By the way, I think it would be cool to have irealMyst Island 2D static shot nodes to match Full Version iMyst Island nodes so you can switch between them. Before, after, before, after... That might sell a few more copies (and upgrades).

They actually did even better than that! . . . IMO. . .I wanted to go buy the full version and I have it on two different devices Laughing
