Hi folks! Brand new here. I was playing Uru via Gametap, fully intending to finish it before the 9th... and it's starting to look like that won't happen. When Uru Live goes up, will there still be a single player element to the game? Or will I have to go out and buy Uru Complete Collection or whatever to play the game alone? Will I be able to work through the puzzles on Live without interacting with other players? I'm not much for online communities, I'm afraid, but I love Uru and the gameplay it offers.

URU Live is multiplayer only. You'll still be able to buy URU: Complete Chronicles though.

Uru Live is MMOG, The original Uru Live: ABM was redesigned so people could complete the game by themselves (single player puzzles.) However many of the puzzles were designed for groups to sovle together.

We think you sould be able to play Uru Live and ignore the community if you so wish.

If by single player you mean, you have an avatar and your own ages and will you run around completing them, then yes each person will have ages and journies to make. I can go to my Garrison or I if a friend shares their Garrison book with me then I can go to theirs. I'll still have to make the Uru ABM journey, but I'll be able to meet up in the nieghbourhoods and cities.

Uru:CC contains the last of the original Uru Live material, it was again repurposed, we know that Cyan plans to include this in Uru Lives story.

Thank you both for the quick reply!

I'll probably start out wandering about solo and getting a feel for things on Live when it comes up. But... I've been reading around the forums. You all seem like a much -nicer- bunch than I had expected from having played other online games. I might just see how things go with making some friends when the game goes up.

Thanks again!

Hello XyzzySqrl Very Happy

As was mentioned above, you still can play Uru Live in a single mode (partially). Majority of the Ages will have their own instances, which you'll be able to wonder on your own, if you wish so. There might be puzzles, though, that by inviting your friends will be solved or accomplished easier. I'm not sure if we have puzzles that require multiple players in order to solve them.

You could even have your own Neighborhood set to "private" and invite only your friends there.

I was in the first Beta of 2003 and never experienced the multiplayer aspect of the games before that. Now I can't live without playing with my friends, whom I met online, in Uru.

I'm sure you'll change your perspective when you start playing Uru Live. Very Happy

Please revisit this thread in a couple of months and let us know Smile

Welcome to the forum and the community Smile

Hi XyzzySqrl ! At first I was very frightened when I meet other people in UntilUru ( the game to play while we wait..). I have had some wonderfull experiences on my own in URU, and was certainly not used to meet other people in games. I was sure every one in there knew each other, and that I was just the stupid newbie. But the URU community is the most dedicated and the nicest on earth.

So look forward to launch!. Welcome to you. It'll be great Smile

Actually you'll be playing Uru originally in the best of all possible worlds:

Uru initially was designed to require some help with certain puzzles, but this was changed apparently when Ubi insisted there be a standalone game. Uru I believe was intially supposed to be multiplayer from the get-go.

That said, I was in the original Prologue. You do not have to "group" with people as in some other MMOGs. There are situations where getting through parts might be *easier* with help, but there's always a solution to get through stuff singleplayer.

You will also have your own personal instance of the actual plot ages. You can decide to do these alone or share them with other people to invite them in to keep you company and help you.

Good parts of Uru involve the Neighborhoods and the City. You'll see people in the hoods as they are shared by different numbers of players, and you'll encounter people in the city, which Cyan has maintained they do not want to instance...meaning there's only *one* city and you should be able to go there and see everyone else currently in the city, whereas there are parallel universes containing game ages and hoods.

One of the problems with the original prologue was they had trouble getting more than about 35 people in the city before it got so laggy that weird stuff happened.

How many people make for a good exploring group? Or is this not really an issue? I was at long last able to log into the Dimalia shard a few times(Thank you powers that be) before I got the never ending "authorization failure" or what ever it was. I was never able to really get a good handle on the whole multilayer environment. I have had lots going on in RL to keep me from digging out the old disks and hunting down the patches and keys for a complete reload. So I am waiting with baited breath for Live!

Kinda related, but is there any chance of new offline expansion packs for the original Uru, based on the additions to Uru Live?

No. The graphics and physics engines are both different.

Wow, everyone above has said just about anything I could think of to contribute. All I can do is answer Spacehead's question about good-sized exploration groups.

Based entirely upon the way puzzles worked in Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, a good group size is just 2 or 3 people. You can always invite more if you wish, but 2 or 3 people is both cozy, and works very well. I don't know if Cyan will add puzzles to Uru Live that scale with more people or not. I suspect the answer to that, though, is "no."

Note: The movie "Happy Explorers" in my signature is filmed in "Until Uru" (a free online derivative of Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, which will probably be shut down when Live launches). It shows multiplayer solutions to many of the puzzles in Uru... so it can be considered somewhat of a spoiler for the beginning Ages. View only if you are insatiably curious about how multiplayer can change the experience.

a quick note about the differences between the original Uru Live Beta (prologue), Uru CC and Uru Live (to be released next month.)

Prologue, Uru:ABM and Uru:CC all use the Plasma 2 graphical engine, and the Havok Physics engine. Havok is a third party company who after saying they would do a MAC port never did. Cyan developed the Plasma engine themselves.

Uru Live will be using the Ageia Phsyx engine (I think this is confirmed) Ageia make a range of Phsyical Processing Units (like a graphics card but for game physics) but you don't need one of their PPU's to use their physics library. This physic library is known to work on the MAC platform however there are no MAC PPU's. So MAC currently can only so a software emulation of the Physx, just like 99% of us on XP will be.

Uru Live is also supposidly going to use an updated version of the Plasma engine(they haven't stated offically what they have done), assuming they stole most of the updates they made for Myst V we can expect Direct x9.0c support, increased graphics card support, lower min specs and that incredibly cool water from Noloben (I hope.)

Thats everything thats been mentioned in these posts over time, if anyone can see any inconsistancies or misinformation feel free to correct me.

Oh and if you do have Uru:ABM or Uru:CC try http://plasma.cyanworlds.com/ and join us on UU while we wait to be invited into the Beta.
