Post Posted: Wed Oct 11, 2006 3:35 pm — Post subject: Pronunciation of Kemo

I just noticed for the first time (shows how much I've been paying attention Wink) that in the garden speech Yeesha pronounces the "e" in Kemo as the one in "see" and "heat". Shouldn't that be written as Keemo, then? Did she mix up english and d'ni pronunciation when recording that speech? Or she's right and I should just give up trying to read d'ni texts?

AFAIK... Kemo, the way it's written in English, is pronounced kee-mo. If you wanted a short 'e', you have to write it kemmo.

I don't know how it's written in D'ni, i don't know the language....

No, you should not give up reading D'ni texts. After all it might come in handy. Wink

Kemo. Hmm.. I've been pronouncing it like you would if you read it as a D'ni word, but I'm inclined to think that Yeeshas version is more correct. After all, the English texts are just transliterations.

Depends, I pronouce it Kehmo like the start of Chemistry. I believe that the e in translations usually refers to an eh sound in the D'ni word, not 100% sure on that though.

I believe it's Kemo and that it's label Kemo not Keemo: 1. because Keemo looks bad Razz 2. many other areas and ages are pronounced differently than they are spelled or would be spelled in D'ni (Ae'gura, not Ay'goorah, Eder not Ehdur). It's just the way the D'ni was translated so it looked good in the English language.

Makes it hard to pronounce for non-english people though, as we have to guess whether any name is to be read with d'ni or english rules, or a mix of the two.

Kemo rhymes with Nemo.

(Kee-mo; Nee-mo.)

You say tomato; I say tomahto...

I would venture to guess that Reverend Vader did not refer to the Latin word for "nobody", but the character in Pixar's "Finding Nemo".

It can be hard on english speakers too, since we don't know how heavily the word was anglicized in the romanized spelling. For example, the name of Gehn's father, Aitrus, was not really anglicized at all, but is more of a direct transliteration, while Atrus used an anglo-centric phonetic transliteration of the name. So it can be tough to work backwards to determine the proper D'ni spelling until you've heard the word properly pronounced.
