I really like all of the following composers:
Robyn Miller- Myst and Riven
Jack Wall- Exile and Revelation
Tim Larkin- URU and End of Ages
Pretty much equally.
What I want to know is, which Myst composer is your favorite?

PS. sorry if you hate me posting polls.

I like them all pretty much equally as well, so I voted for the last thing. They're all different but they're all good

I like all of them pretty much equally too, I think. I listen to all of them, in different moods.

I like Robyn's haunting minimalism, and I think of his work as sort of the "classic" Myst music. I like Jack Wall's sweeping melodies and ability to integrate music from various cultures into a cohesive whole. I like Tim Larkin's exotic and atmospheric style.

So... I really don't know how to pick one. If I'm going to just throw in a CD, it's most likely to be Jack Wall. But for my first bellydance solo performance, I danced (with permission) to one of Tim Larkin's songs, and it worked great.

I don't think I can pick one. Smile

I'd say it's pretty close between Robyn and Jack. Robyn made some great stuff, and it's classic. Jack however made some incredible stuff and really pushed the limits of his budget (making some incredible music in IV following some excellent music in III).

I'm not as much a fan of Tim Larkin's music though. It just doesn't create the same atmosphere as Robyn and Jack's.

I love Tim's music for Uru, but given that I had only one vote I went for Jack. It was a coin-toss thing.

It was very close between Robyn and Tim, but I had to go with Robyn.

given a choice between the top two, robyn and tim, out of necessity i would have to choose robyn; after all i suppose he did set the surrealistic tone for myst and realized that the serries really did need music after all (i don't think they could have gotten away without it), my uru soundtrack however is played much more these days than my myst and riven one...

... recently i reached into my back catalog of games and noticed i had a myst v soundtrack under all the packaging; it has still yet to be played...

though i voted for robyn, i will admit the viarity of larkin's work does surpass that of robyns...

... robyn used a ton of purcussion, he's still the grandaddy of myst's soundtrack however.

Jack, hands down, with the exception of one Robyn piece, being the one that plays outside the whark room in Riven.

I like all of them, really, but if I had to choose one, it would be Jack.

Mostly because I love live orchestras. Not much of a fan of MIDI music. Again, I don't hate MIDI, but if I made a Myst game soundtrack, it would be 70% orchestra and 30% MIDI. MIDI is good for those moments when you need an alien sound, something you can't achieve with real instruments- and we all know Myst games have these moments.

Robyn work on Myst was very nice...a little more background music would be nice, but the different themes for each age were fitting and came in the right places.

Riven is a different story. The theme was nice, but it was too subtle. Also, it's barely heared in the game, I wish we could hear more of it. Also, Tay and 233rd age had the same theme as Riven, for some reason. I think they should have had different themes.

Another problem is no orchesta.

Jack work on Exile and Revelation was awesome...each age has it's own theme, the use of orchestra is wonderful...although at times it was too much orchestral, too less alien MIDI sound, too much needlessly epic. Also, the music could be a bit more subtle.

Tim did a great job with Uru. Again, no orchesta is a problem, but the use of MIDI, like Robyn did, was very good. At many places the music came right at right place, but sometimes it repeated too much and too soon (K'veer theme).

What is that fourth option? Looks like gibberish to me?

if i included the all of the above choice, everyone would chose it.
this forces some people to make some decision, and along with the discussion, this give a good idea of what people think.
the fourth choice is not actually gibberish, but it is interesting watching people chose it when they have no idea what it is. all because it's a tough decision.

Then you didn't want to know what people really like. Some people won't be forced to make choice. I didn't vote but I agree with MystDee that I would have chosen all of the able.

it is actually more accurate if no one can say all of the above because given the situation lots of people would be saying all of the above, myself included. by removing that option, it causes people to think more about it, and then they more likely have something to say, rather than just voting and leaving. the discussion of these artists is what this thread is about, i don't care much what people vote. it doesn't mean much.
