I've been poking around and prodding and it seems that on the guild of writers website and such there are fan created ages. However, it isn't clear if these can be accessed from Myst Online, or just through the original Uru games. What is actually possible as far as creating material for Myst Online goes at this point? Furthermore, are there any good links to tutorials for creating fan based ages and such, since it's obvious that such things are possible at this point, at least in some sense?

Fan Ages can't be accessed in Myst Online, no.

A good place to start looking at how one makes Ages is on the guild of writers' wiki, or in the Fan Ages thread stickied in this subforum.

Difficult question.
In a sense a lot of things can be done, but in truth: not much. Cyan has released tools that enable us to create MO compatible Ages; but these Ages currently cannot be put into MOUL, and they cannot even be tested.. So essentialy they are useless. :/
Truth be told we can test those ages, but in Uru (offline), and using different tools; so we are stuck 'outside MOUL'.
That means though that you can start learning the tools to create Ages, to be ready whenever Cyan enable us to actually test them.

Not to forget them, OHB's projects are really the only user created content that can be integrated with MOUL at this point. They are external programs that interface with MOUL through the same user interface that you use. This way, you can run a "bot" character (though uses for that are limited), perform automatic language translation (very useful people who are not literate in English), and you can get a few perks such as cut-and-paste into the game that way.

We're all hoping to see fan ages implemented in MO:ULa, but it's taking a while.

Cyan Worlds has described integration of fan servers and fan ages as a priority, though, and they're working towards that goal with whatever resources they can scrape together.
