You have probably heard people talk about how they solved Myst in one day, or in a matter of hours, and how easy they found it to be. Now admittedly I was in first grade when I started and was more interested in looking at things than solving puzzles, but it took me a very long time to solve it. It seems like it would take longer than a day to find everything in Myst let alone put all the clues together.

I just curious as to how long it takes most people.

That was so long ago I can't remember. Did not take as long as Infocom's Deadline, which took me seven months, or as short as Infocom's Infidel, which is solved in ten hours. I dunno. I DO remember having more fun than should be legal.

That's a tough question since I was also a youngster who loved to look at things... and was also scared to go into any age besides Myst (I would save before linking and would then revert back). Plus, back then I always used walkthroughs since I couldn't figure anything out for the life of me Razz

When I first played it I was a little kid and really had no idea what I was doing. Even then, it tended to crash before I could do anything... So I played it for months, but I never actually got anywhere. When I was older I finally got a new copy of the game and played it through in a couple weeks, playing a little bit every day after I got home from school. I'm not sure exactly how long it took me, though, because I played Myst and Riven pretty much back to back and the timeline blends together.

It took me a few days, but then I'd just finished Riven, which took me a few weeks.

If I'd played Myst back when my friends were playing it, who knows how long it would have taken.

Hard to say- Calendar days probably a month, but actual time? Probably 16-20 hours. (Less than a day if you want to look at it that way...) I only got 1 hint at 1 point when I was stuck. The hint consisted of my boss walking down the hallway and bouncing off the walls, if you can believe that!

I actually played realMyst, so that might make it a bit easier.
I managed to play it in around a week, averaging one hour and a half each day. I never looked for a walkthrough, except in the Channelwood age, and then again just to learn what I was supposed to be looking for (a maze... what were the clues to find the path?).
I had also played parts of Riven before (unfortunately, with a walkthrough ; I was about 11 years old at the time and didn't really understand what the game was about) so some puzzles were familiar to me.
Oh, yeah, I used a walkthrough for the entire orgue phase. That was just ridiculously frustrating.

Rly depends if i'm measuring by how many hours of game time it took vs. how long it took in terms of calandar time.

it's hard to fathom game time. i too was a young lad back then to rly recall but it took me at least a few months (as my vote reflects) in terms of calandar time. back then i wasn't a "gamer" and i didn't even realize walkthroughs existed so it was just me, my mother, and a friend who ran through it figuring everything out for ourselves. except the final solution which my mother figured out how to spoil. after that, we "completed" the game but still had some progress left unfinished.

i also spent a lot of time sightseeing and making (rediculous) false assumptions (that were fueled by the overactive imagination of an adolecent)

regardless of how long it took every second was a profound experience.

The organ puzzle is much harder for me in realMyst than in the original. In the original I have very little difficulty in carrying that pitch in my head, but in realMyst hearing the sound of the wind outside when I do it throws me off.

Strange that you bring this up as it relates to the thread here: http://mystonline.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24622&highlight=happy+birthday
I was an ovule waiting to play* so it took me WAY longer than the rest of you...

*I originally had 'pay' typed and almost left it in ...but couldn't totally leave it out either.

Like most people here, I was very young when I played it with my dad. So it seems like a very long time trying to solve it. When I really count back though, I think it should be something around 10 days. We didn't have a computer that could run it ourselves, and so we played illegally, after hours at his office, or at a friend of his, which made our playing time quite restricted. My estimate could be completely wrong though...

Post Posted: Fri Apr 22, 2011 3:37 pm — Post subject: That darned elevator

Unlike most of you, I was not so young at the time and it still took me weeks to figure it out. My main stumbling block was the elevator in the Tower passageway. Maybe it had something to do with my upbringing, but I am not very good at closing doors. My parents were always mumbling something about being "born in a barn" and "leaving the barn door open".

Anyways, I could not figure out why the elevator would not work! The only reason I was able to link to Channelwood was because, between my kids and I, we punched in every 3 digit combination until the lock box opened. Woohoo!

It was not too long after that, I reached that palm to forehead slapping moment when I finally clicked on the elevator door and it closed, allowing the elevator to now go up. What a revelation! From there onward, I was in business. It still took me weeks to finally complete the game, but it was not nearly as frustrating as it was before my elevator moment. Embarassed

Unfortunately, I did not learn my lesson and had a similar problem with Riven. Something to do with open doors blocking a passageway. Rolling Eyes

The Riven doors were tricky at times... I'll give you that. And that Myst elevator door is tricky... did you realize it in Channelwood since you have to close those doors too?

My entire family played the game together and we all made a special pact not to play without each other. For that reason, it took us a really long time to actually complete the game. Also, my sister and I were both really young when we were playing and a few of the ages scared us so much, they were hard to complete, especially Mechanical. I think it took us a little over a month. I'm not entirely sure.

Good memories though.
