As for the Starship Enterprise, some of the tech manuals do show where the bathrooms are.

That's fortunate... I can imagine the dialogue, "I don't know what happened... I finished my business and pulled this lever; the next thing I knew, I was on the surface of some strange planet. Go figure."

Awesome poem Mowog! Lissie, Rand told us that in Myst it was intended that there be facilities under the island and accessible by the elevator but it was never completed due to the CD-ROM capacity issues. It's also why the elevator doesn't have a down button.

There's LOTS of Star Trek shower scenes, they just never managed to show us the toilets.

You know, honestly, I agree that there should have been SOME kind of facilities written into the game. Not that they need to function. Not that there needs to be a /takedump emote The fact that they AREN'T there isn't the end of the world to me, but it WOULD soothe my sense of "completeness". There are LOTS of games that I can think of that have a toilet built into them and its not a big deal. List follows:

Goldeneye64 - If i recall correctly, one of the missions STARTS in the public bathroom, after dropping out of a venitlation shaft. And i think there was a conveniently forgotten handgun lying around in there too.

Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life - There's two little rooms off the kitchen... you can't see into them, but take your little player in one and you hear a suggestive little *bloop* followed by a sigh of relief. Hilarious!!

Animal Crossing - There isn't a bathroom per se, but you can get a toilet as one of you pieces of furniture in the house, and you can sit on it (feet dangling and swinging like a little kid too hah!) and flush it.

Mass Effect 2 - There is both a men's and women's head on the Normandy (spaceship) and depending on the gender of your character, you will only be allowed by the ship's AI to enter the right one Very Happy It also has a bedroom (for *ahem* well nevermind) and a kitchen (though I don't recall if you actually EAT there... just talk to the cook who is also the ship's janitor...)

I'm sure there's more, but I don't want to take up all your time. All that being said, I know that retro-programming a toilet space into the older games is a bit much to ask. And trying to insert a toilet space into Uru as it is right now might be a bit much too. And until there's a day when new Myst-universe games are being developed (which I'm afraid will probably be never), I suppose we'll just have to cross our legs and hope to die.

What's this fixation about the need to have facilities apparent in what is, after all, only a game. Rolling Eyes How much realism do we need? Can't we just accept that the existence of facilities to meet the needs of bodily functions is implied, and move on.

They'll be demands for a public convenience in D'ni Ae'Gura next. Laughing

I, for one, don't need to 'see' such facilities. I just assume they must exist somewhere; that's assuming I think about it at all. It doesn't spoil my gaming experience.

Sleeping, it's for sleeping; yea. How else are ship Captains suppose to dream? (I didn't just say that... Shocked ) Oh look, it's a Serenia linking book! Very Happy

This is a family friendly conversation about toilets people. Move along, you don't have anything to see here...

Yes, but hopefully a MOUL toilet won't be located in a glass room, a la Portal. Wink

He he, what if it was a link-in point... or if you had to solve some really gnarly puzzle to open the door...

hehehe i don't think that a toilet or any other facility need become essential to gameplay... If anything, they should be nothing more than "red herrings," places to look at, where at most there might be some useless clickables (ie flip through a recipe book on the kitchen shelf or a dog-eared copy of National Geographic in the basket beside the toilet) but nothing that necessarily relates to solving puzzles or learning about the difficult history of the D'ni. Toilets may serve a purpose that some may find awkward to talk about, but that doesn't mean portraying them can't still be tasteful Very Happy

Well, think of all the construction materials the DRC left lying about. safety cones, traffic sawhorses, construction lights, tents, generators... all that's missing from these standard construction site set items are the port-o-johns

but think about it, realism aside, what other reason is ever present for bathrooms to exist in video games? that's right... bathroom humor... as in the afore mentioned head on the starship Normandy in Mass Effect where the ship's computer reminds the player that their bathroom is located on the other side of the ship based on the gender of the players character. or Golden Eye, where players shoot a guard as he's coming off the john (tee hee) or the various uses of toilet related sound effects and onomatopoeia ...
