Not more as quoting games that do feature toilets, if you ask me Wink
And still this thread has not suffered any hidden insults, attacks or other follies so far.

Can we agree on keeping it that way?

To follow the trend of pointing out toilets in video games...

In No More Heroes, my favorite Wii game(s), you save at a toilet! By going to the bathroom! Isn't that just, just so... Ah, screw it.

--

I do like seeing bathrooms in some games, but I wouldn't in this one. Myst is a universe of fantasy, interest, curiosity, and has quite a specific atmosphere. Personally, I don't like going and thinking "Oh look! Oh my, oh my, hey bro, look! This is a toilet! This is where the D'ni go poop! Now isn't this exciting?"

I'd rather keep that up to the imagination. Maybe the proper place to poop is off the cliff into the fog of your relto? Maybe people poop into the lake? Maybe the food they eat doesn't require them to poop? Maybe they're really good at holding it. Who knows?

And another point that's been made quite a few times, is that they have better things to do for now, yet, even when they don't have better things to do, I'd rather not see toilets.

Forget about there being toilets in Myst, I want to see someone create linking books in real life. Wink

Speaking of Wii games, Elebits has toilets. However, I did just remember a game that does not have bathrooms that probably should: Chibi Robo. You're a robot that cleans up messes and helps life problems in a house. Well no wonder why there's so many problems and messes! There's no bathroom!

If we were to have a bathroom in Myst, it'd need to be cool. I'm picturing something innovative like Sirrus using one of those cool tubes on Spire, but the D'ni should have a more elegant device for this.

When my father was stationed over in Naples, Italy, we lived there for 4 years. As a teen, I can remember going to different Roman ruins all over Italy. Pompeii was the best, but the interesting thing was, how all the tourist there wanted to see the toilets.
Fact is, many people find the subject facinating, especially when you compare what you see in the ruins to your modern day WC, heh.

Romans were not bashful about it, that's for sure. Their public toilets were, well just that: VERY public.

I know it's not necessary in a game to have to show people the facilites unless of course their is a good reason for them their (in games like DOOM 3D, I found the bathrooms very creepy looking).

So I'm not surprised that people want to know basically how the D'ni went to the bathroom. It might be a fictional ancient culture, but people will still want to know.

Heck, if we ever make contact with an alien species out there, I would bet big money that one of the most pressing questions will be: How do they go poo?

Have we ever stopped to consider that D'ni anatomy might possibly be different than human? Is it possible that they incorporated their linking technology into their facilities of relief? Maybe they simply didn't have toilets. I would hope not though; I can only imagine what Ti'anna would have done if that was the case.

You know /why/ we are all so fascinated with it? Because we all do it. It doesn't have to be dirty or uncouth. But we've all had that time when the burritos didn't agree, or that little accident when we drank all that soda and started laughing, or whatever-it-was-that-happened. And even if those things /haven't/ happened to us, we can all understand, empathize, and appreciate such an event in another person's life.

And as for the cultural aspect of toilets, that is HUGE. Check out the sanitary facilities of any ancient civilization, or even a recent one, or heck, the civilization(s) alive right now. The condition of their facilities can tell you HEAPS about them. If they were public, as in the case of those mentioned from Rome, it can confirm hypotheses suggesting that Romans had little modesty. If facilities are luxurious and decadent and very private, it could tell you that a civilzation was wealthy and took great pride in their personal hygiene, and valued privacy. If facilities can't be found, one can suspect that waste was dealt with in perhaps the most natural way there is: a trench or hole where the waste could decompose and increase soil fertility. Because lets face it, they had to go SOMEWHERE.

So maybe the D'ni just did it in a chamber pot or had a little niche carved in the stones of their backyard. Maybe things were private or maybe they had a public bathhouse where waste was dealt with. These things are /interesting/ to some folks, not because we're creepy and have poo fetishes, but just because we're /curious/.

Very Happy
