Is the new guild of greeters going to use voice chat or just keyboard?

I personally will not be using voice chat, but that doesn't mean other New Greeters cannot. It will be a personal preference thing really. Smile

Would it also be possible to post a schedule of when greeters will be available in the cavern?

At this time, due to our small numbers, we think it will be best to have no schedule. That way our greeters can greet whenever they like and not fell pressured to be there at certain times. The goal is to try our best not to interfere with real life.

That said, we will probably have one in the future if our numbers grow. Until then, it's just whenever we can make it. Smile

Thanks again Trekluver and Best wishes. The folks you have recruited so far are top notch.

Thanks so much Ja'de. Glad you like the new recruits. Smile

Copied from the New Greeters calender event:

Quote:

The first New Greeters guild meeting will be on December 20th. Everyone, non-New Greeters included, is invited to be part of this historic meeting. We will be voting on administrators, hiring liaisons, and other things that will impact the future of the guild. We will also be accepting new members at this meeting, if anyone would like to join. Be there at 2:00 PM EST, 12:00 KI, in the Guild of Greeters Hood. For more information, please contact Trekluver.

[EDIT] Edited to change the date, time, and location.

Regarding voice: My suggestion would be that unless you're asked a question in voice chat, you should assume people want text. Give your initial greeting in text, and give any answers to text-questions in text.

The voice chat can sometimes be rather quiet, and can be a bit glitchy on slow or high-latency connections. Beyond that, varying accents can make it hard for a non-native speaker to understand what you're saying.

Just my $0.02

This is a good point. For the sake of communication, perhaps we should stick to text unless voice is absolutely necessary?

The in-game voice implementation isn't exactly top-notch either--that's part of the reason text is so much more prevalent.

Something to think about for Greeting, sparked by the questions about in-game voice chat... Skype is free, and easy to use. I'm not sure how much of an impact it has on computer resources so you'd need to experiment to see if it will co-exist with Uru. Folks in Guild Wars use it regularly to help coordinate teams. So, perhaps just ask newcomers if they have Skype, and if they'd like to use it for answering questions. You can have conference calls, too. Might be Teh Cat's Meow for door runs. Smile

I can vouch for Skype, I can also put in a good word for Teamspeak. Teamspeak is a little easier to use with other aps up and running on a desktop, seeing as how it was designed to be used in conjuncture with online gaming. Less window and control switching involved with Teamspeak compared to Skype.

Might be a good suggestion if the Greeters had a dedicated Skype and/or Teamspeak channel.

A Teamspeak server is not out of the question. While I personally won't use it, I won't prevent other NG's from using it if they want to. If you guys decide to go that route, let me know and I'll see how hard it is to set up a channel.

[EDIT] I Edited the guild meeting times above. For quick reference, it's on December 20th at 2:00 EST, 12:00 KI, in the Guild of Greeters Hood.

I think it's a good idea to have voice options available if a player wants to use them, or if there's a big complicated conversation to be had.

I also think you need to be careful about how you present them. Most people are going to be fairly comfortable using a text chat. Having somebody ask right away if they want to use a voice system could be off-putting, and we don't want to do that. Having it as a note in a "Beginner's Info" KImail of some sort might be useful, as well as mentioning it if somebody asks a questions that requires a big answer. But I'm not sure that bringing it up early with new players is going to be helpful.

True, Paladin, that is likely to confuse otherwise relatively simple matters. I'd suggest having Teamspeak/Skype et. all. info and directions generally available for public reference just to make it known, such as on the hood imager, here on the forums or on the official websites, and that there need not necessarily be a need to bring it up specifically, unless a situation warrants it.

That way people can know the voice chat service is available for use without necessarily having to ask or be told.

I suppose a Greeter should occupy a voice chat channel while "on duty" in URU so they can be contacted there if anyone prefers. but in general external voice chat services might be better off being secondary to URU text or voice chat.

Just keep in mind that when greeting, if you are giving someone help with hints (or outright spoilers if asked for them), it's best to use text rather than voice, and direct those answers only to that individual rather than the Age Players. I know this should be obvious, but I've seen it too often forgotten. Voice is fine for general conversations, and can be easier sometimes, but you should also remember that some people still don't use speakers or headsets.

In The Fun House, we actively discourage the use of the in-game voice. Generally the presenters are in other voice chat programs, and have our Uru sound turned off. If we see the voice animation, we'll send a quick message explaining that you can use voice with your friends, but if you want to ask a presenter/hacker a question, you'll need to use text.

I don't think that attitude is appropriate for the Greeters. Main_Avvie is correct that you probably should be ready to answer questions asked over voice, but beyond that I'd pretend it doesn't exist.

It might be worth noting that if more than one other person is present, voice chat can be extremely confusing, since it's not immediately obvious to a newcomer (or even sometimes to a veteran) who is speaking. As a Mac user for whom the in-game voice chat is not one of the options, I've yet to come across an issue that can't be explained via text.

On that note I also recommend mumble or ventrilo. Both are very handy, light and clear programs. After all, 'outsiders cannot run a voice chat.' Wink

Hey guys,

Now that the New Greeters have been successfully announced, the time has come to lock this topic. The mods are ok with this as well.

Some time soon, the mods will start a sticky topic on the events forum for New Greeters events. For further discussion, we have started a discussion forum at OpenUru.

http://forums.openuru.org/viewforum.php?f=105

And as always, if you'd like to join the New Greeters just PM me and I'll get back to you right away. Thanks for making the New Greeters announcement a success. Thanks for all the advice, criticism, and encouragement. See you In the cavern.

Trekluver

P.S - If you guys still want to talk about Voice Chat, fell free to start a topic at OpenUru.
