Gorgeous! I don't regret my ten bucks for it.
If the development of Uru engine wouldn't have been stopped many-many years ago... This quality is simply impossible to reach in Uru.

Wow!!!. Glad I didn't try it..

Dont let others dissuade you. If your computer can run it it's an incredible experience.

Worked for me without any flaws.

Very pretty but seems kind of pointless.

What a wonderful way to tell a story. Beautiful environment to be immersed in and to learn in. I am inspired.

Having played all the Myst games and spent some time in the Cavern, and also playing all the Half Life games and spending lots of time in CS:S this looks to me, having watched a couple videos, like someones attempt to emulate the Myst environment in Half Life without all the great puzzles and the variety of back stories and without the great graphics, though they seem better than Half Life2. The idea of a mystery is cool, but if all you do is wonder around and listen to a voice over story in a real big, pretty CS:S map then all I can say is "meh".

I couldn't step away until I had gone through the whole story either. I will go again as there were forks in the paths that weren't explored.

I use Steam but don't pay much attention to the download time. Some games have taken hours so I go cook dinner or something.

I got myself a Maingear gaming PC and I love it for experiences like Dear Esther. Really an amazing work of art.

Hope you all enjoy Dear Esther

See you in the cavern.

Yesterday morning it took less than 10 minutes to download Dear Esther using the cable internet we use at work. I tried to download it again late afternoon onto a netbook so I could check to see if it would run it, and Steam was very slow and problematic. I even got an error message from Steam to try again later.

Dear Esther will not run on a netbook with an N450 processor, Win XP, 1 GB RAM, and an Intel GMA 3150. This netbook will run Myst Online very choppily, but it doesn't play well with Uru CC at all.

I just completed Dear Esther in one (rather long) sitting.

My. Goodness.

While it might not appeal to a mainstream gamer, it certainly enthralled this explorer, and I couldn't let myself stop
until I'd completed the journey. Esther provided a thoroughly wonderful evening, and I hope to revisit it on occasion.
Imagine Myst without the interactions... just the environments and an unfolding story, and you've got Dear Esther.
Except those environments are incredibly lush, and the underground segments are breathtaking. Seriously breathtaking.

Thanks for the original post! Earlier this evening I'd never heard of Esther, and now I've finished it, much to my enjoyment.

Cheers,

Mowog

Mowog, you've described it most wonderfully and appropriately ... Razz

I've bought this incredible and intriguing 'game' and story today and 'played' through it for about three hours ...
Those magical caves alone are so vast, I know I've not yet explored all of them ... What an adventure and
experience, exciting and very contemplative at the same time and I know I will indulge in this piece of art
and beauty again ... Next time with german subtitles btw ... There are several translations available on the
Steam forums which only have to be unzipped into the game's recources folder ...

Yeah, thanks again, alswaiter and to everybody else's inspiring comments ... This gets an explicit recommendation ... Very Happy

This game should certainly end the debate from a while back over the Source Engine vs Plasma Engine in regard to graphical prowess. Dear Esther looks incredible.

I'm with Mowog, and Chuckster; 2 Cents to help context here, that I had learned:

"Dear Esther" has been around for a while as a (free, I think,) development "Mod" (new "Age" in Uru language) to Valve's "Half Life" MMO on Steam, and is still available for download from Desura if you have Half Life already.

It had a reputation for breaking the polycount limitations...and was said to be somewhat buggy, with astounding Graphics. This cought my attention, in the general scheme of things, since it could have possible relevance to MOULa evolution, I thought.

So when Steam announced that they would 'unlock' (Release) a developed "Standalone" version of "Dear Esther" on 2/14/12, I immediately signed up and loaded $$ for the event. I was not disappointed. The Landscape is Huge

I run a low end graphics (3) Media PC with a dual Processor (4.8 ) score; it only tripped twice, but slowed in certain areas, like MOULa can, when loaded.

The Story Line is more like a single thread Marker game with candles as Markers, 1st person view, and there are no exploit opportunities worth noting, I think; but it draws you back to the core trauma scene of a psychological Detective hunt. Reviewers couldn't figure how to classify this 'Game', one reviewer said it was selling "Unhapiness"; "Extreme PTSD" (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is the best description that I could come up with... Sad

Whatever, it's a new Genre perhaps. But then Half Life might be called "Extreme Trauma and PTSD" I couldnt possibly comment...(I threw it off my PC years ago to preserve sentient blood pressure Smile)

Like MOULa, Dear Esther may stand as a milestone on the road to better Virtual Reality Graphics, I think. For that , it is well worth experiencing.
