Post Posted: Sat Feb 11, 2012 12:01 am — Post subject: 2 x Qs: Standing Jump & Snowy Textures

So its been a loooog time since I was in the Cavern, like, more than a year probably. I had a spare hour or so, and decided to revisit some Ages I never completed since Live ended. The executable I had on my desktop didn't even work anymore, I had to reinstall the whole thing. My avvie was still there at least, so that was nice.

Anyways, I was having two major problems that I know others have had, though I hadn't ever run into them personally till now. Can anyone point me to the fixes?

1) Standing jump: whenever I try to standing jump, avvie throws his arms up in the air and just kind of... stutters. He doesn't actually jump, though the animation is partly there. Biggest issue here is the collapsable Teledahn metal walkway; running jump doesn't do the trick, and my stutter-jump apparently isn't "jumpy" enough to trigger it to fall (and thus I can't complete the pathway between the Bahro door and the generator).

2) "Snowy" textures: large pieces of texture are just white. Some things show up normally, but large chunks are just blank poly models. It made the Kadish floors a little challenging when you couldn't see where you had to walk... Smile

Tips and fixes appreciated, thx!

Hey Rils,

1. Someone else can explain the physics of how and why the standing jump annimation has changed, but it has. You don't get much height these days, and it is as you described. The solution to the metal catwalk in Teledahn is to CAREFULLY measure a running jump from a "running-jump distance" from the edge of the catwalk. If you get the landing right on the end of the catwalk, the thing will drop.

2. The texture thing is most definitely a video driver issue. I've had it at least twice in the past. For me, I resolved it by reverting to an older driver. I suppose it's possible that a new driver would fix it depending on the graphic adapter you are using. Try reverting to older driver first and see if it works.

Cheers,

Dadguy

For 1., I most often see this come up after someone has upgraded to a newer, faster PC. For some reason "speed" affects the physics behaviour and one observable effect is on jumps. If you have a tool to slow down the PC (like overclocking in reverse) you could try that and see if it helps. That's worked for some people.

Like dadguy says, the missing textures is almost certainly a driver issue, and I had that particular effect on an old nVidia card when I first got Uru:ABM (the "Snowy Relto" problem). I think I've only ever heard of the problem with nVidia graphics, but it wouldn't surprise me if it happens with others, especially Intel graphics. Check you've got the latest driver.

WOW , this is great Laughing I finaly have found the answer to why my Eder Gira fish have been translucent for so long ( both in the off-line version as on moulagain ) I did not even know they should not look like that untill they changed to normal . Well , at least a partial answer . Thanks guys Razz

Thanks guys! I tried the pacing out the run-jump, and managed to get the bridge down after a few tries. AFAICR that's the only place where a standing jump is required to progress, so I should be ok there.

The graphics thing is a real problem. At first it was just irritating, but work aroundable (I've done the Kadish floors enough couple hundred times to have an idea of the path to walk, even if I can't see the floor). But now it's officially affecting my progress - the Yeesha imager symbols are whited out so I can't set them for the post-journey, and Ahnonay is covered in about 30 feet of snow, I can't even see where the water meets the land.

Mac, you're right, it's a newer computer (like within the last 8 months), and the drivers a up to date. Dadguy mentioned rolling back the drivers, how do you do that when there isn't anything to roll back to?

HI rils. could you list your system specs and OS as detailed as you can please? I have had problems with graphics in the game and stutters as mentioned above in the past. I have used nvidia graphics cards for years and and for the most part great within live (moula), with a few texture hiccups in Ahnonay but minor. The Geforce driver set comes bundled with Ageia PhysX drivers which are needed in the game. A friend was recently having issues similar to yours and the Nvidia graphics driver update sorted it out. I am running an AMD based 64 bit pc with and an older geforce 8800 gts 320 directx 10 compatible card under windows 7. I have set my shortcut to urulive (moula) to compatibility mode fo XP service pack 2. This works for me on my system and i have a great gaming experience. Perhaps you could try this and list your system specs and OS? Also do the problems with textures you are having occur in other games? Do you overclock your graphics card? Good luck.

To get ramp to come down try run jump from side to side near end of ramp. You can not jump over the rail but you do get a higher jump that will lower the ramp.

OK, there was a point a while back where the latest drivers for my nVidia card were causing serious problems and I had to revert to an older version, and in that case I just used the Microsoft certified driver.

If you don't have an older driver to roll back to, there is a relatively simple option:
1. Uninstall the current driver. There are several ways to do this: First check if there's an Uninstall option for the graphics card on the start menu.Failing that, look in Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, or find the Display Adapters in Device Manager.
2. After the old driver is uninstalled the PC will want to reboot. Let it do so. It'll probably re-start with a chunky, default VGA driver (when I do this, I log in using a different admin account to stop my usual desktop layout from getting messed up).
3. The Found New Hardware wizard should detect your graphics card and allow Windows to search Windows Update for a suitable driver. Let it install the driver it finds. It'll not be an particularly up-to-date driver, but it'll probably be a stable and well tested one.

Afterwards, keep an eye on open for any new drivers for your card being released by the graphics chip vendor.

This thread has helped me solve a bit of "funkiness" within my 2 different system in regards to MOULa game play. Laughing
Once again, great advice from forum posters and especially, Mac_Fife. Always knowledgable and helpful.
Thanks to all. Razz

I came across this thread and found the problem with the standing jump interesting. So I tried an experiment.

I recently got a second account so that I could play two avies at the same time. My oldest avie - Kero - I play on a 2003 Dell desktop with an ATI GeCube Radeon 9200SE. My younger sister - Tarma - is played on a 2008 Toshiba laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500.

Kero got an invite to Tarma's Teledahn and met up with her in the hut. They tried some standing jumps. On the Desktop - Kero jumped normally. Tarma's jump was not as high and sort of stuttered. On the Laptop - Tarma could bearly make it off the ground. Kero got a little higher but came down quickly and did a second little jump. (This occured in the time it took Kero to make the full standing jump on the Desktop.)

Both avies headed to the broken walkway. Tarma tried to make it go down by jumping several times. It didn't budge an inch.
Kero then did a standing jump in the same spot and it went down on the first try. Laughing

Moral of the story - newer isn't always better....... Razz Wink

PS: I'm finding that running two avies at the same time can make for some interesting viewing - Kero was standing by the crates near the rock weighted ladder on the back side of Teledahn. Tarma went to the gun to shoot the rocks so the ladder would drop. As she was turning it she accidently fired it at some crates that were right beside Kero. Kero saw the crate get hit and the splinters fly. Shocked
