That's an issue most couldn't see while playing on Gehn because we have already all passed the Cleft & most have already finish Yeesha Journey (some with ease...some with pulling hair time Laughing ).

More importantly, there were no major changes that should have required complete testing of the Cleft, and so no testing was done. This was a minor change that would have gone unnoticed if not for a typo.

That's correct, I chose poorly when wording that description.

Gehn is often a testing ground for new features, but it is not a live testing shard for active development. That is to say, we have our own private testing shards upon which actual development and testing is performed. Gehn has the latest features by virtue of being the shard run by the developers and having the path of least friction, and ultimately that means it's marginally more likely to see little bugs like this crop up, simply by the nature of being the first to incorporate these features. The updates Gehn receives are things we believe are stable and ready for wider testing; the kind you only get with a larger number of players.

That said, we're usually much more careful with testing for the kind of typo that hit this build, but everyone's been busy lately and had less time to spend preparing this release. We have very few active developers these days.

Sweet... you could build a minimalistic testing/devel shard on just one box.

Any chance someone is working on building a Windows based server solution? (/me ducks...) I was able to build most of the database in Windows version of PostgreSQL except I couldn't figure out how to get the uuidgen function to compile properly. (Or any of the other server code... )

This is kind of a cheat, but you could use a Virtualbox Linux then configure it to be integrated into your network. It makes for a nice little testing shard.

Adams & Deledrius know best

Gehn is NOT a testing shard

Pitch Sale:

"On Gehn, you'll see the last cutting edge of URU Developments and some of the best Fan Ages will be displayed for your enjoyment."

/me looking for a V.P. Communication position.

I preferred my way of seeing "The Changes under the hood" but that's a good explanation. I knew the expression we use a similar sentence in french too for something new. Wink

Since I started talking here and I don't want to go back-and-forth between forums...

What do you mean by: "perturbed matrice" Confused ? I'm pertubed right now Laughing

Well, yeah... sure. You could also run WINE in a linux box but, paraphrasing the comment in the wiki on doing this, 'this is beyond the scope of my expertise". It's a great source of personal irritation that I've forgotten so much about programming since I got sidetracked keeping an old legacy application running for years after it should have been replaced and then had the plug pulled when it no longer could keep up with an increasing performance need. It's been a decade since I had to really write any code and I find myself totally out of date with modern coding languages. I silently fume at not being able to contribute more than simple testing.

I think this is similar to "reticulated splines".

New Sale Pitch:

I thought Minkata was the test shard for stuff for MOUL. Gehn shard has some rather big changes from what I know, can it be trusted that fixes there would still work for MOUL here? Okay, I guess it depends on the nature of what's trying to be fixed... I just remember it was Minkata that called itself a "sandbox" and it seems closest to what we have for MOUL now.

Not that I'm saying every shard should be a test shard or anything.

Minkata is the Cyan-blessed shard for official testing of patches for MOULa, yes.

We have submitted patches through that process which received use on Gehn first. Much of what is on Gehn has been in the improved codebase for nearly a year now. Minkata is meticulous, and Cyan has little time to spend on accepting and testing patches, so it all takes time to work its way up the long chain.

One of the things we've spent a lot of time and effort on is not breaking compatibility with Cyan's shard. Sometimes this has required us to work around bad code rather than fix it, as doing things properly would severe the ability to stay compatible. There has also been a lot of work and discussion for maintaining the ability to push and pull patches back and forth to and from Minkata (thanks, CWalther!), so that our major fixes can eventually make their way into the old client still used here by those playing on Cyan's shard (and so that we can take advantage of fixes made solely there as well).
