Post Posted: Thu Apr 19, 2012 3:30 pm — Post subject: Bevin Creators Should Have More Control Over Their 'hood'

In my opinion i think that the person who starts a bevin should have more control over it. As it stands now the only way to discontinue someones membership is for THEM to delete their bevin book. This has lots of issues. First of all, if you had a member who was a 'troll' you can not get rid of them in anyway, they are the ones who have to delete their book. This can lead to lots of problems for people. I think this could be a useful feature. Bevin creators could also have the ability to do other stuff like customization of the bevin (far fetched). Makes sense. if you don't want a big clock in your bevin you should, as the creator have the ability to change it.What do you think? Should bevin creators have more control over their 'hood'. What other things should bevin creators be allowed to do?

Or as other folks have done, create another hood, move the good peoples to it and not the bad ones and be more careful who you let in. Wink

Please note that hood owners can and have gone just as wanky as members. So it goes both ways Rolling Eyes

I totally agree Semplerfi.

You can't get everything you want. Jeeze, the game is free with the opportunity
to donate.

And yes, some of the "owners" are a bit different, I must say.

Leave the old Bevin/Hood and rename it "New XXX Bevin"
Eventually, the old bevin/hood will just drop off the nexus.

Just imo.

"The Game Is Free" is the reason, but it's a poor excuse. Wink

The fact is, 'hood owners really have no control over their 'hoods. This was apparently never the intent, but controls to adjust things were never finished. Making a new hood is a poor bandage for the problem. Workable, yes, and currently the best we have, but let's not put that bandage up as preferable. Very Happy

Things like this are on the to-do list for open source. A very long list. Sad

IIRC, I once read an early beta KI Guide where a Bevin had a Mayor who had the power to kick a member. This would have been back in '03 or thereabouts when Uru was still in closed beta. If I can find that document I think there was a screenshot of the KI interface showing this.

edit: and unfortunately it appears it was on the old laptop that died and I have yet to try to recover the disk data.

Even without that old document, you can look through some of the localization and find references to Neighborhood mayors

I'm pretty sure the power to kick people out of a neighborhood was never part of a Mayor's powers.

Mayor – The person who created the neighborhood. The mayor has vast powers. Just kidding. The mayor can change the neighborhood from public to private, or vice versa, and change the neighborhood description.

The person who creates a neighborhood is its mayor. As mayor, you can make the neighborhood private or public and alter its description.
1. Link to your Nexus.
2. Open your KI. You’ll see “Create Neighborhood” in the Devices list – click it so it appears in the Send-to field.
3. Click to the Journal Entry view.
4. Create a new journal entry, using your neighborhood name as the title and a description of the neighborhood as the text. The name is displayed on the reader board in the neighborhood square and the text is displayed at the bottom of the large KI.

Making Your Neighborhood Private or Public
1. In your KI’s Settings view, click on Neighborhood Settings.
2. In this view, you can click the Make Private raised words to change the neighborhood to a Public one, or to a Private one if it’s already public.
3. You can also change the text of the neighborhood description.

Inviting Someone to Join a Neighborhood (any neighborhood member can invite someone to join)
1. In your KI’s Player view, locate in your Buddy list or Age Players list, the player you want to invite.
2. Click their name.
3. Now click the arrow to the right of the InviteToJoin list name. This places the invitation in that player’s Incoming folder.

Inviting Someone to Visit your Neighborhood (any neighborhood member can invite someone for a one-time visit)
1. In your KI’s Player view, locate in your Buddy list or Age Players list, the player you want to invite.
2. Click their name.
3. Now click the arrow to the right of the InviteToVisit list name. This places the invitation in that player’s Incoming folder.

Joining a Neighborhood
After a member of a neighborhood has invited you to join, there will be an invitation in your KI’s Incoming folder. As long as that invitation is present, a private link is available in your Nexus and you can visit or join the neighborhood (depending on the type of invitation).
1. Go to your Nexus and access your private/public links (it could be private or public). Link to the neighborhood.
2. While in the neighborhood, scurry over to the Nexus pedestal in the neighborhood linking room and place your hand in the MT link. (If the door is closed, a member must open it for you – if they want to.) A dialog will appear asking you to confirm that you want to join the neighborhood.
3. Once you have joined the new neighborhood, you are no longer a member of any other neighborhood, however you can be listed as a guest in the old neighborhood. See the Guests section.

Visiting a Neighborhood
Neighborhood members may invite a non-member for a one-time visit (for a special event perhaps).
1. Go to your Nexus and access your private/public links (it could be private or public). Link to the neighborhood.
2. You may not join this neighborhood unless an invitation to join is given. Otherwise, you can use the MT link only to link back to your Nexus. Once you leave this neighborhood, you cannot return without another invitation.
By sometime in 2003, they had gotten rid of the Mayor and replaced it with Owners.

Neighborhood mayors are mentionned in this Ubisoft page...

It's not mentioned there, but it's safe to assume there would have been some kind of membership controls at some point. It's a basic aspect of all player-run organizations in online social environments, after all.

I think there should be an easy option built into Uru to make it easy to go completely Neighborhoodless. Some people may not want to be a member of anything, like if they are new and still looking around, or just want to be more alone.

That's why there is a delete button on the neighborhood book. Click the little D'ni zero and you do not belong to any neighborhood.

Of course, the way the game works that only goes so far. As soon as you want to link to a hood-instanced area (like say you found one of the many ae'gura stones)... you find that you actually DO have your neighborhood, and aren't gone from it until you join another one.

The only real way to avoid having any neighborhood at all.. uh...
Hm. That's actually a good question, considering you're assigned one at the start (probably related to said hood instances thing). I suspect there is no real way. Just pretend you don't have a neighborhood and never visit any ages that require you to be in one? Confused

Yes, the game is written to assume you have one at all times. The workaround is to simply make your own, and leave it private. You now have personal instances instead of 'hood instances. Wink

Good point. The Gahreesen and GZO books and the city Bahro stone in a neighborhood are hood-instanced no matter what neighborhood you use them in. You only ever see people in them who belong to whatever hood you are a member of. The only way to be alone is to delete your hood book, access the nexus, create a new hood, and set it private. I believe the GZ is also a hood instance when you get to it. Trying to think if there are any more hood instanced areas....
