Post Posted: Fri May 18, 2012 4:14 pm — Post subject: Myst The Book of Atrus Comic

Hey everybody,

I've started working on a comic/graphic novel adaptation of The Book of Atrus. It's my FAVORITE book of all time. <3

I've done three chapters (55 pages) so far. You can read / follow it here: http://mystcomic.smackjeeves.com/

Комикс “Мист”, теперь на русском! It's also in Russian! One Myst fan has been translating the comic (which i think is pretty cool). You can see it here: http://a-comics.ru/comics/myst-book-of-atrus/1

So far I've been really enjoying making this. I've wanted to do something like this for a long time. I hope you enjoy it. Very Happy

-Heather

(If you've already seen it ... I just added the latest page a few minutes ago! Smile

Fantastic work, Heather!

Really well-planned, well-designed, thoughtful, caring, insightful.
Great lines and shading and characterizations and....everything.

...I'm now a fan!

Heather, this is beautiful, in all the senses of the word. Your portrayal of the story is honest, sensitive, and goes beyond the book in its insight. The thunderstorm scene is a magnificent delight.

"Atrus, what do you see?"

I look forward to seeing more.

Thank you.

I've been following this for a while. It is excellent. I really can't praise it enough (and I have been sharing it to friends as well). You're doing a marvelous job!

Absolutely wonderful, I don't know how I haven't seen it sooner! The characters are very expressive, I love the little touches like the "lizard man" and the geology book which really bring the story to life. I'll be following this for sure! I noticed you're working on getting a print version through Cyan as well, and if it helps your case I would totally be on-board for ordering one!

Beautiful work that's visually faithful to the game while being narratively faithful to the book. I can't wait for Atrus and his father to make the Descent. I want to see the Cavern through your unique vision. Very Happy

Really beautiful work, Heather! Congratulations!

Wait - your last name is Larkin? Any relation to Tim Larkin?

I must agree with everyone else, you're really doing a fantastic job of this. A few weeks ago I read through everything you'd done and was thoroughly impressed. So faithful to the original story (unlike the "professional" Book of Black Ships comics). I'm eagerly awaiting every update you put up. I truly hope you don't get burnt out on this and leave it half finished it is just soo good. I'm sure Cyan will give you permission to sell printed copies too when you're done if that's something you wanted to do (they seem pretty good with letting people sell Myst related works if it's kept non-profit). I'd be at the front of the line if you did. I'd proudly place it on the shelf with my hard covers of the book! Smile

Keep it up. Loving it! Smile

Thanks everyone! So many thoughtful, wonderful comments. I'm so happy.

I won't have a new page (Chapter 4) for a few weeks, but I when I do, I let people know via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, DeviantArt, Google+ and RSS (I'm trying to rock the social media) If you like/subscribe/follow any of these, then you'll get the latest page, and also some new sketches from me. And a lot of them are Myst-related these days Smile like this one: link

Please share it too! (thanks Deledrius!) I'd love for as many people to get a chance to see it as possible.

I agree with @numinous I don't want to get burned out and see the story finished either. That's why I'm happy with the format. I know its rough and monochromatic, but it's a format I can replicate easily page to page. It allows me to explore the story, which is the most important thing to me. As for the script, it's pretty locked down and there are so many exciting scenes I'm looking forward to doing. I am confident I can finish it (all your lovely comments certainly helps)

As for a print version in collaboration with Cyan, I'm doing my best to make it happen. Very Happy

@TOOO Any relation to Tim Larkin? Not that I know of Smile

Thanks again everybody! Have a great weekend Very Happy

I'm posting this as I'm reading through the comic, so I haven't gotten to far into it, but I really like the style and the pacing here. Seems like a nice adaptation.

It might be cool with this style to add hints of color from time to time, since you aren't really locked into a black and white medium... like it'd be neat if the kitten were tinted orange to make it stand out, and then you could reuse orange for the D'ni lake... Just an idle thought

Edit: Just finished. Very nice. I notice that the RSS feed is updated on a per-page basis. I don't suppose you could put up a feed that only updates when a full chapter is complete? I liked reading through these all in a row and I think reading a page a day would feel weird

Damn, this is good.

I haven't read any of the Books, since I'm not a big fan of these tie-ins, actually: take away the interactivity of the game and what remains usually can't stand up against works that were created in a literary medium from the outset.

But I tore through your comic in one session. And now I want more...

Are you aware that the novels aren't a re-telling of the games, but different stories entirely?

Inspired by this comment I'd like to mention that if this, your outstanding 'Book of Atrus' adaptation,
would be to a certain degree adapted to your latest 'Atrus sketch', which is overwhelmingly adorable,
beautiful and just cute, that'd be probably the ultimate awesomeness possible per se ... Razz

At the same time and immediately I'd like to reassure you that your unparalleled creative
piece of art is already spectacular, captivating and perfect as it is ... Very Happy

And I get your point and like your stance when you're saying

It is nice to see the 'Shipment tracking paper' of your 'print version proposal to Cyan Worlds'
on your tumblr blog ... You're a very extraordinary, wonderful young lady, Heather ...
Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing all your treasures with us ... Smile
