Sorry about dusting off an old chestnut here, But I'd like to be able to install Uru: Complete Chronicles on my Mac (using WINE). The problem is, when the installation gets past saying "Looking for locked files", it comes up with an error saying "String ERROR_CANNOTLOAD cannot be found in string table", with a second error that says "ERROR_CANNOTLOAD".

It may have been covered way back in 2004, but I can't find any info about it today. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Shorah T-Squared,

I'm a Mac user too and have tried to get Uru:CC to work in Lion without luck. The article referenced by Karkadann was helpful only to a point. The article author says (correctly) that trying to port with the new version of Crossover Games is buggy, and thus far, I haven't figured out how to get a legal non-demo copy of the older version recommended in the article; plus it doesn't seem to work in Lion anyway.

If you don't already know about him, Paul the Tall is a very prolific game porter using Wine. He does this all in his spare time for free/donations, and has so far put an amazing array of games out there along with video instructions for installing most of them. I submitted a request to him for Uru:CC back in March and he's said it should be an easy port and that it's now somewhere on his to-do list. You may want to read the short thread I posted there and add your own request (who knows, it might help bump it up his list a bit).

Of course, if you figure out how to get the Wine installation to work, please post here!! I would love to know how to get it to work.

Wow, thanks for dusting off that chestnut. I've managed to get URU:CC (GOG distribution) running under Mac OS X Leopard. (Not Lion, sorry Ainia.)

Well, sort of running. I get this weirdness:

I've followed the instructions on the Zibland page, except for installing Drizzle. All seems to run fine - until I get to Relto.
Relto and most other ages (but not all!) seem to be hidden in a massive fog. Relto's is kind of very light lilac, Teledahn's is orangey. I can't see anything unless I switch to 1st-person and get really close to a wall. Then I see the textures. That way I have been able to visit several ages from my Relto, by pushing my nose up to the bookshelves. Wink I don't know anything about physics engines, but it looks like fog/mist settings have somehow been dialled up to max.

More weirdly, some ages look fine (Eder Gira, Bevin, Er'cana)

Even more weirdly, after visiting Er'cana, if I link back to Relto, the fog there is gone! And the other ages look fine as well, until I quit the program and start again, when the fog returns, again until I visit Er'cana. Curiouser and curiouser...

I'm on a Mac Pro from 2006, with an old graphics card, but it runs fine under Windows XP on the same machine. (There it has other quirks, which is the reason I want to run under Mac OS, but I won't go into that here.) I will probably test under Snow Leopard as well - but I don't expect it to work under Lion, which has done away with backward compatibility.

Is there anyone with expertise who could venture a guess as to what's going on here?

When I got the ERROR_CANNOTLOAD thing (Wine 1.4.1 on Debian), the error output showed that it appears to occur while trying to load "MFC42.DLL", which is a Microsoft library that is apparently not included in Wine. If you have a Windows installation, you might try to find it and copy it over to Wine's system32 folder. (Best to be careful of websites offering DLL files for download, as Wine is probably not completely safe against Windows viruses.)

After I added the file to my .wine/drive_c/windows/system32 folder, the installer successfully completed.

That is a WEIRD dll for some reason.

Shorah,

Thanks to my new hero Arancaytar, I now have Uru:CC running off my Mac under Lion! Since I already had a well-traveled version installed in Bootcamp, I found it worked best to create a fresh Wineskin and then copy the entire Bootcamp Uru:CC installation into the Wineskin Program Files, as well as adding the mfc42.dll file from my Bootcamp Windows system32 folder into the Wineskin analog folder.

I now have everything from my Bootcamp install available to me directly on my Mac (including the fan ages and Crowthistle/MagiQuest/Myst 5 stuff I'd installed in Bootcamp with the tool-that-shall-not-be-named). I am one *very* happy camper!!!

/me does the happy dance until she's dizzy. Very Happy

For those that wish to follow suit, I've uploaded both the dll file and the Wineskin that I made. Since the dll is directly from my Windows 7 installation, it *should* be safe. But please let me know if there is any trouble with the Wineskin (which should have the dll installed already). A word of warning--the Wineskin is large! (142MB)

[[Edit: the Wineskin link doesn't seem to work right since it has an .app extension--you will need to right-click and Save As in order to download it successfully. Just be sure to use an .app extension on the Save As filename.]]

Shorah out there,

Although I was able to play Uru:CC via Wineskin at first, now I'm getting a stackdump almost immediately after starting. Even after creating a fresh Wineskin and reinstalling, I get the same behavior. Is there anyone out there who can help me troubleshoot this??

Here is the LastRunWine.log file (can't spoiler it successfully for some reason).

Here is the LastRunX11.log file.

Hoping there's a simple solution... Confused
