I'm with you on this. An age creator would be the deciding factor for me subscribing to URU Live. Ever since myst I envisioned the day I could "write" an age. Now it seems like the possibilty is finally here. Like all of you I enjoyed exploring ages for the story and the beauty, but I also liked how they got my creative imagination working. I don't want to just passively explore, but also actively create. I'm sure that there some others who understand exactly what I'm trying to say.

If fans managed to create user content during the void of CYAN content when hope for URU was dim, then they're not going to stop now. Fan-created content is an inevitability for a community this dedicated. The question is whether CYAN gives us tools and its blessing in order to let fan creation flourish.

I guess we just have to wait for CYAN's final word on this.

If Cyan put fan made age in Untíl Uru, it would draw players away from Uru, and thus hurt the number of subscriptions.

True. That would be bad.

As for only wanting Cyan content, I doubt anyone is going to force you to go look at the fan made ages. I would imagine that you can just ignore them and only play around in the offical Cyan made ages if that's what suits you.

Exactly. If there was a movie out that I would absoulutely not want to see, I wouldn't go out and try to destroy all the film. I just wouldn't go to see it. Cyan will undoubtedly give credit to the person who made it. It might even just be accessible from that person's Relto. So no worries there.
It's not that I don't think you age creating people don't have talent. What I've seen looks good. I just really love Cyan's worlds.

The solution I would suggest is simple:

When you create and age, it appears on the bookshelf in your Relto, but only your bookshelf. You can invite your friends to see your age, just as you could invite them to any of the offical ages on your shelf.

At this point, once the age is complete, there should be an option to submit it to a public library for other players to explore. If there is to be any approval committee, it would naturally occur at this phase, but I don't think it's really neccessary.

This allows people to tinker with the idea, and improve their skills before making the age public.

The golden rule of player created content is: If you don't like it, don't use it. In this case, if you link to a player created age, and it's so awful you wretch in disgust, then link out, and pick another book.

It might also be benifical to include a method for ranking player made ages, so that each person who explores an age, can vote on it's quality thus giving an indicator to those browsing for new ages which ones are considered "the best."

Rieuco's suggestions make sense to me.

I would only add that, for a plethora of reasons including legal liability and IP rights, it will doubtless be necessary for Cyan to approve any outside material before it's added to their servers.

In regard to this thread, an excellent summary of Cyan CTO Mark DeForest's recent Town Hall Chat is up on the DRC Liaison site.

We do not have enough information to say one way or the other about this topic. The original purpose of this thread was to make the *suggestion* that fan made content be included in Uru Live.

I think we should leave this alone until we have some definitive information about what Cyan is going to do about it.
