Post Posted: Wed May 10, 2006 11:54 am — Post subject: Are the private shards being forgotten

After the almost fatal blow took UruLive from us the first time a dedicated group of fans kept the Uru flame burning on the private shards of UntilUru (UU), and I am not denying it was forsight on the part of Cyan that made the code available.

This has been a fruitful source of ideas and bug fixes submited to Cyan.

The private shards relied on the Kagi Key and you cannot deny that the numbers joining here does owe something to the support of those users who nurtured both returnees and new members using skills and knowledge forged in the private shards.

The Kagi Key is no longer available and it does look like the private shards are being dissowned.

All I am asking is a consideration that these newcomers and returnees be allowed to see the place where Uru was kept alive through the dark times.

In the chat log, Moke is quoted as saying they will keep UU alive. It will be a matter of deciding what to do with it, once URU Live is up and running. As Paul is quoted he's asking about the possibility of fan based material being used on UU. So, don't worry, we'll still have UU, as well, for the foreseeable future. Smile

When Until Uru was launched....I was one of the first excited explorers to re-enter the cavern. I came to UU August 6th 2004 and made the caven my home right up to when D'mala was launched. I knew in my heart that D'mala was a stepping stone on my way back to the real thing.

During the thousand of hours I spent in UU, I waited, hoped and prayed for the day when UruLive would return. The "Until" in UU never left my mind. I knew UU was not permanent as I along with others waited patiently for this new dawn. I spent many long and happy hours in UU and to fail to express my gratitude to all the shard owners and admins, would be so wrong. My home shard was Tapestry and to Eric, greypiffle and Miles....I say thank you so much for your dedication and hard work keeping the shard alive for me and for your friendship. To all the other shard owners and admins, I say thank you so much for your dedication, hard work, warm welcome and friendship. To all the many admins who over time helped me with making so many events successful......I applaud you and thank you with all my heart.

Over time UU became more than many seperate shards. It became an international community....a family really. It always amazed me how so many people from all over the world could pull together and enjoy each others company. So yes I voted to keep the shards opened and allow access to them. As it has been suggested, perhaps they could remain testing ground for new fan created ages. The userKI and adminKI capabilities are still fun and could continue to be enjoyed on those shards....

So Gram takes off her helmet and quietly bows in gratitude to all the shard owners and admins who helped keep the dream alive with Until Uru......

I was able to 'sneak in' some of the shards... while many are rater echoey places, right now, some are still active. I was privileged to get a glimpse of what was before... and indeed, it musy've been a wonderful time. But i think, and hope: the best is yet to come...

Private shards shouldn't become simply a free, albeit non-updated alternative to Uru Live. Once Uru becomes known to the general populace of MMO players, many of whom will jump to take advantage of any opportunity to play a game for free, that is what Until Uru would become. So Kagi keys would keep money going to Cyan (correct me if I'm wrong on this). Players who joined during the current free time should still be able to play for free, though.

Cyan stopped using Kagi a while ago, and I doubt they would bring it back up again.

I can imagine UU being host to User created ages. I really can't imagine a majoraty of the user ages being up to scratch for Live (although there might be a few I hope). UU would be a good home for them, since it would be an entiialy fan driven area (fans hosting the shards and fans modifying them)

simply put the UU servers could be used as a try till you buy type thing. New players could have free access to them and if they like what they see they then can sign up for New URU live and get more content and more ages to explore.

Personally I'd bring my server back up(took it down mainly because not very many people for the amount of servers). Its still in working condition. Cyan could give updates to fix UU server problems as they get them. only thing that would not be on UU servers is New content. just the fixes to make the experience better.

I voted for free access. I was against it because the "free" seems like an invitation to trouble-makers who are interested in pranks instead of community. However, on further consideration, it seems obvious that we can do on the UU shards what we can't do on D'mala and won't be able to do in Live: Kick them off the server.

I want to keep Until Uru for all the reasons that SuperGram outlined, and because it will offer a relatively quiet place to go to discuss things. Further, it offers the same sort of thing that a neighborhood does; a place for friends to get together without the crowds that are sure to show up in Live.

It would be nice, however, to have a few simple things to play with, like that green and white soccer ball in Eder Kemo.

I'm not against a continuation of Until Uru on private shards, but if people log in there instead of the official server in order to gather and chat, Live could have a negative drawback. Sad

And should we then close down the forums because they detract from the time that would otherwise be spent in Live?

Morningstar isn't saying that we should shut down Until Uru on private shards (in fact, the opposite). The point, though, is valid and simple: If people are spending time on Until Uru servers instead of Uru Live, there won't be as many people in Live.

Yes, I did get the point, Owehn.
And my point is that the UU shards are not a alternative to Live, but a supplement, like the forums are. Should we be closing down the forums because people are gathering there to discuss things, rather than going into Live for such discussions? I think not...
