Ah! Okay. It's pretty clear that -et is a suffix that converts verbs into adjectives. If you look at my earlier posts, I show examples. I found that info cruising the DLF site.

Yes, -t / -(e)t is still something of a mystery. It seems to apply to nouns, but with only a few examples, I don't have a firm grasp on it. For now, it seems to be used to indicate motion or tendencies toward something. The two examples I know of, shorat and vamot, roughly break down as "relating to a time of peace" (peaceful) and "located toward the east" (eastern).

It's going to be a bear figuring out when it should be used.

No, I think it's far more likely that there's only a single suffix here, -t ~ -et which is attached to both nouns and verbs, exactly as Talashar said. Compare the parallelism between šorat "peaceful" and çevet "[thankful]". It's simply a statistical coincidence that so far, all the nouns have ended in vowels, and all the verbs have ended in consonants.

This seems like a good place to ask for verification of an alteration I made to a quote by RAWA. Years ago, he wrote:

.trepråd kotsaven trepråd ederen (In the rock she lived, in the rock she rests.)
.yavo pilelen yeret vēlāon (May Yahvo receive her soul.)
source

I wanted to change "she" and "her" to "they" and "their" and came up with this:

.trehprad kotsahveet trehprad ehdehreet (In the rock they lived, in the rock they rests.)
.yahvo pilehlehn yehreht veelaios (May Yahvo receive their souls.)

How'd I do?

It's a pretty simple exchange of pronoun suffixes. I can't see anything wrong with it.

Yup, no problems there, Tai'lahr.

"Souls" should probably be plural, so veelaiteeos.

Good catch, Talashar, and thanks, everyone for reviewing it for me.

Now, about the English... I don't think there's supposed to be an "s" at the end of rest, so I'm dropping it.

.trehprad kotsahveet trehprad ehdehreet (In the rock they lived, in the rock they rest.)
.yahvo pilehlehn yehreht veelaiteeos (May Yahvo receive their souls.)

Don't be afraid to try for variations. For example, I wrote this for Dierdre's memorial service announcement:

.teSora yeret eDerem, DErDre
(In peace may you rest, Dierdre)

With a small change, you get:

.teSora yeret eDertE
(In peace may you(pl) rest)

Hey guys, I have been trying to catch up on the forum activity of the last 6 months or more and I have to say reading this discussion has been one of the highlights! My brain feels it has been on a nice brisk walk. I do so miss being more involved in the cavern! Thanks for being smart and chatty.

Since the search function in this forum works about as well as a broken axe handle, I have no idea of this has been asked before. So here we go (again?).

I've been searching the internet for translations of D'ni writing on various buildings and signs, and wonder if anyone knows where I can find them.

More specifically, I'm looking for translations of the writing on the Ferry Terminal and Kerath's Arch.

So, anyone know or can point me at a source?

Hi larryf58

You can search the contents of an URL using Google advanced search, following the instructions on the page https://www.google.com/advanced_search
Here is a list of results for your query:
https://www.google.com/search?as_q=translations+D%27ni+writing&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=mystonline.com&as_occt=any&safe=images&as_filetype=&as_rights=

Try adding the extra keywords for the place names translation you want to repeat this search for more specific results

Morning

Learned how to do that a long time ago. Thanks anyway. We also have a translation of the inscription; we got from RAWA last year.

BTW, your name in Japanese isn't what you have in your sig. It's 朝衛星, which transliterates into "asa eisei".

i am a surviving member of the D'ni Linguistic Association and also do Linguistic work on the Surface helping indigenous people preserve their languages tho few have any form of written languages. We did indeed discuss this and other inscriptions found in the D'ni ruins and remains. I will go over this thread with interest soon when I have more time. If you are interested I have some notes on other picogylphs and other research that Tichelle and IreeenQuench did and talked about in their Walking tour lectures, and some work I have done on my own. good to see interest continues on this topic. I also have extensive notes from RAWA on this so will help as I can.

Abso-flippin'-lutely. I spend heaven knows how many hours scouring the 'net for notes, chat logs, and other sources of information for my web site. Chime in on the topics here as you please.

Also, if you're ever so inclined, I'd welcome any contributions you might want to make to the site. I have a section devoted to D'ni language and math. While much of it is revivals of other people's work, I have a few things there that are original too. There's plenty of room for expansion.
