...words like "EDGE", "GRID", and "DIRT" made you think about D'ni?

My brain still does a bit of a record scratch when I see these titles...

*sigh*

Is it sad that I didn't even know those existed until now?

Yikes. Apparently, I was an assistant guildmaster for G.R.I.D. (Guild of Researchers Investigating D'ni), inspired by GRID (Gordon´s Really Incredible Discoveries).

Angelfire site that contains GRID and EDGE info. You can also go wayback by plugging www.futurecontact.com into archive.org (ignore that link, it's dead). If you want the original GRID, plug in www.futurecontact.com/GRID.

Off topic? not sure

Remember when Riven first came out and you could not play it because your pc was not powerful enough.

I still think that when I see DIRT. :P

My computer could play Riven.

But speaking of Myst and hardware, one of the major influences to get a DVD burner was Myst 4 and one of the major influences to get a new video card back in the day was URU. I never had RealMyst back in the day so I never upgraded anything for that.

Remember when we crammed upwards of fifty people into the pods shortly after Tetsonot had arrived? And then after around six hours of having a great time, the final portal didn't even open?

...I'm pretty sure our weight must have shifted the pod away from the location of the portal. Yeah, that must be it...

This makes me think I am somewhat 'late for the party', so to speak.

I do remember the first time I saw the riven CD case. Vaguely. My dad got it out from the big chest in his room. I think he said he'd been saving it for me, or something like that.

I constructed my first computer because of URU. I suffered through years of lag with Myst and many other games, until URU Prologue was launched and I...could...not...move!!! L...A...G...

But the computer rebuild effort paid off, the experience was life-enhancing, I loved being an early member of the GOG, and all the subsequent wonderful content and beta-testing were the most memorable gaming times I've had.

Today, those seem like innocent times, experiences created to bring goodhearted people together, like a 1950s block party. Is that romanticizing?

This.

I had to keep asking people at work not to discuss their Riven experiences within earshot, for fear of being spoilered.

I have the original big box of Riven, as well as Amerzone and others, like DiscWorld Noir and Sanitarium. Remember big boxes (8-1/2" x 10" on average)? Remember boxes at all???

Crazy how "advanced" the games were for the PCs of that era. But it got me hooked on upgrading my PC and eventually building my own twice.

Little did I know that it was all about two things. Immersion and community.

Then along came URU....

Remember when video games had filmed live actors in them? Sometimes I miss those days :).
