I remember when I had a Commdore 64 in 1985 and had the text adventure (remember those?) The Hobbit on tape.
It took exactly one hour to load.

Then it was typing in commands like ...
open door "You open the big round green door"
Look north "You look north and see a winding path"
north "You go north up the winding path"

remember those games?

@Charura: I don't think people would mind if you corrected their spelling and grammar ;). Just don't change the context.

I'm too young to have played games on tape or most text adventures when they came out. Recently I picked up Zork for my old Mac(it's like on every platform) and I once tried to play Adventure (that one is tough).

Adventure, Jamie? The one that was the original Colossal Cave, that begins with you standing outside the well house? This one?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossal_Cave_Adventure

It is challenging, yes, but also rewarding both in the achievement and in the lovely descriptions of certain locations, that made you feel much more immersed in the game, like you were in an actual cave. In this sense it shares an affinity with all subsequent "adventure" games, the need to involve the player as completely as possible. Some succeed better than others :)

Zork is the three-part version of the follow-up to Adventure, and was known as Dungeon in its earliest form. The game that started Infocom.

I remember playing Colossal Cave on a 64kB CP/M Z80 crate back ina bout 1979 or 1980. It was called "adventur" there because you could only have 8 characters in a file name.

I've actually got a v2.1 version of it that runs on Windows.

A web-playable port of Adventure: http://pr-if.org/play/adventure/

It seems probably that the entire genre of "adventure games" was named after Adventure. (Which was, yes, also titled "Colossal Cave", but naming was a tentative thing in those early days.)

Remember when the phrase "no ones here on a late Friday nite." meant that you were on the verge of new adventure?

Yes, I remember back in the 1980's, I wrote a simple text adventure game based on Harmony Gold's "Robotech" science fiction cartoon. I sent it off to Carl Macek, the head of Harmony Gold, Los Angeles, With the idea he could use it to promote the cartoon series as a give-away item, or use it as a jumping off point for a more involved computer based adventure game. I didn't hear anything for almost a year. Then I got a letter saying that my package had gotten lost when they moved their studios location and had only recently been found, and that unfortunately, in the interim they had already contracted with another studio to produce computer based games based on their property. I sometimes think how my life would have been different - not better, just different- if my package hadn't gotten literally lost in the mailroom... :)
