OK, slightly odd question. I currently can't get into Uru to find this myself, because my PC died yesterday.

I'm helping a friend who is currently playing Uru (offline) for the first time. She hasn't played any of the other Myst games and in fact Uru is the first adventure game she's ever played.

Can somebody please tell me where you learn to count in Uru. When I encountered the puzzle in question, I already knew the number symbols from a previous game. But my friend doesn't have that knowledge, so I'd like to be able to give her some hints of where to look (in Uru) so she can work out what the symbols mean. (I hope that makes sense).

I can't show her on her machine because she's several thousand miles away and we talk via IM.

She's loving Uru, btw. I think she'll probably come to Uru Live when it launches. :D

When you look at one of the notebooks on the Relto shelf, at the bottom of the pages are the page numbers in D'ni.

I'm wanting to point her at something in the game if possible. Presumably the puzzle in question is solvable without prior knowledge of the Myst games or using Google. I'm just not sure where, and I can't check until my PC is repaired.

Or you can go to the D'ni essentials page on the DRC site and mouse over Numerical Basics...

Hi Crid, The first time I did thoses puzzles I had no idea about numbers OR the many forums! I found numbers at the bottom of the pages of the one book on the rt hand bookshelf. Then in exploring Shaper's lower office I found a paper on the desk with numbers and a funny layout of squares and put it all together when I got to the jail cell. Then had to run back and forth to get it all. Hope this helps to give your friend some hints

Aren't there D'ni letters and numbers around the classroom wall / coving / ceiling somewhere?

Yes, the numbers and letters can be found in a fries at the top of the classroom walls. See the pictures in this Chatlog about the first 5 letters:
http://etherlad.livejournal.com/267757.html

The first lesson in this series was about the numbers:
http://etherlab.livejournal.com/19576.html

numbers can also be seen around the edge of the floor of the classroom.

Thanks for the replies. I know the numbers are in the classroom, but that's in the neighbourhood and you can't easily get there in basic offline Uru. (Sorry, I should have mentioned it was basic Uru with no expansion packs).

It's been fun seeing how my friend has been progressing, and giving her clues based on what she's found when she gets stuck, without telling her outright what to do.

Not looking forward to Kadish much though. I thought the puzzles there were the toughest.

Speaking of Kadish, you can also find the first few numbers on the rotating pillars in the Kadish Gallery.

Not easily, Crid, but you can teach your friend the balcony jump (since you have plain ABM) :)

:D Well... I seem to remember taking notes in Riven - I probably learnt to count there. I haven't been to Riven for ages - but I seem to remember a classroom there - with a little game for the kids to play with.

You'll need your underwater gear or some other mode of transport to get there.

You'll need a lot more than just that to get to RIVEN. Riven is GONE. It does not exist. Its spot on the Great Tree of Possibilities is now vacant.

You know, I often wonder what it's like for people who haven't played any Myst games to start with Uru. I mean, I already knew the D'ni numbers and writing, and the backstory...but I often wonder if others are frustrated sometimes. I can imagine people saying "What, were they expecting me to read through a billion Lyst posts to find RAWA's post on how linking works?!"

Then again, I'm one who wonders if movies should spell out plot twists more obviously, so that other people will miss them, even when I get them.
