The island was always there; the "glowing thing" is Gahreesen's maintainers' mark.

Every known age in MOUL has a maintainers' mark except Earth (Cleft, City, Hoods), Relto and Nexus. In the future when the Great Zero has gained its full potential again the maintainers' marks will act as a Zero Point for the age.
List of Zeros
Gahreesen - island near the entrance building
Teledahn - in front of the journey door
Kadish Tolesa - near link in point next to the Nexus pedestal
Eder Gira - inside a cave near at the waterfalls
Eder Kemo - under the leaves near the floating stone figure
Earth (City, Hoods, n/a from the Cleft) - Great Zero above the Guild Hall
EDIT: Fixed error (NoEnoughCoffeeException)

What are we to make of the new numbering on the Hoods? They seem to have four digits now, like:

DRC (3805) Bevin

Sure makes them harder to remember, but I suppose there is a purpose.

Cheers,

Dadguy

Please note the following:

12 stripes on the sun island, one (currently) available sparkly in Gahreesan with a ONE on it.

Now, look at your relto bookcase: Gahree (1) Tele (2) Kadish (3) Eder Gira(4) Eder kemo(5) and then 7 more slots.

That's twelve Ages and twelve sparkly spaces. Note also that Gahree is first in line at the bookcase AND has a one on it... So I think we'll be getting one each month or week or whatever, and the next will be teledahn, followed by the others in order. See?

Very clever indeed. I do believe you are on to something there.

The calendar notion does not make sense to me.

First, the 12-month year is a Earth concept derived from the fact that the Moon revolves around the Earth approximately 12 times per year. Those dwelling exclusively underground will not observe the moon's rotation.

Second, what happens after all 12 "slots" are filled? Do they get taken away again?

Third, the items on the sun/moon island appear only if the Relto owner takes the proper action to get them there. Not a very good calendar that depends on the owner happening upon an object and interacting with that object.

Correction:
The moon needs about 28 days to revolve around earth: 365 / 28 ~ 13 times a year and not 12 as you say. Also it is possible to detect the moon rotation from the caves by measuring the tide and gravitational forces. It should even be possible to measure the rotation of Earth with a Foucault pendulum and Earth around sun with high precision instruments.

A D'ni year is as long as an earth year. It starts 21th of April. Each year (hahr) has 10 months (val-lee-tee) with 29 days (yahr-tee). So the D'ni must had instruments and technology to calculate a year. Or they used the knowledge from the Book of Earth?
A D'ni day is about 30 hours and 14 minutes long. That's the day and night cycle of the algae in the lake.

i dont believe thats a calendar, but not because of it being 12 sparklies... yeesha has lived longer on the earth than underground. Also she knows that 12 months mean more to us than 10.
but darnit i want access to Uru in portugal...

Can you give a source or official reference for this statement?

I don't think it is a calendar... however if it were, wouldn't it make more sense that the one sparklie would move around the island rather than having twelve lit sparklies all around the island and not knowing what month it is?

Anyway, I think the book numbering system makes more sense.
