I thought Gahreesan is the D'ni word for Garrison :P

Close: We know that "Gahreesen" is the name of the Age, and that the name derives from a combination of three d'ni words that together mean "great structure for protection," i.e. fortress or garrison. Whether "Gahreesen" is a d'ni word in its own right is still unknown (to us - I think RAWA was deliberately vague on this).

<garEsen> "Gah-ree-sen" is derived from three D'ni words:
<garo> "gah-ro" - adj. great, mighty
<arEu> "ah-ree-uh" - v. to protect
<senaren> "sen-ah-ren" - n. building/structure

So, basically, it's a mighty structure for protection. It would more accurately be translated as "fortress", but since it sounds so similar to "garrison", it has been generally translated as "garrison".

Hence, those two terms ("gahreesen" and "garrison") are used interchangeably by the majority of the DRC members, and when someone (who shall remain nameless) says anything about the difference, he is generally dismissed as being needlessly pedantic.

Not that he's bitter.

Considering D'ni uses a different alphabet, it could be argued that Garrison is an acceptable, if non-standard, transliteration. Which was incidentally the issue with Dakotah/Tokotah as well. When you deal with non-Latin alphabets, spelling is frequently disputable.

As someone whose first language is not english, I'm sometimes confused by some of the "english friendly" spellings. Garrison is OK, as is Great Zero, because they keep both the sound and the meaning; Dakotah/Tokotah seems just like a bad pun.

Anyway, this thread was about the sparklie, I think. :P

Indeed. Now is a VERY good time to check...
As the Gahreesen spark is gone and a new one's appeared in Kadish
On the pillar puzzle
That you DON'T need to reset to get to
Climb up the stairway you used to get down after getting the journey, then take a running jump towards it. You'll pass through the spark and collect it as you fall. You might have to Relto back, however, as you'll be stuck behind the second pillar.

And considering it appears on the second of the 12 T's, it looks like we're going to be picking up sparks one per month for a year.
I disagree. When was the first "Bahro candle" (I really really like that term) spotted? It was ~ 2 weeks earlier. Is it safe to assume we have a time line then? Maybe, maybe not, but I think that having 1 candle appear per month is a VERY long time for some important new story element to be released.

I look forward to what may happen in 2 weeks time... oh right. We go live :P

Coincidence? You can bet your bottom dollar I'll be out looking for that next candle 2 weeks from now. 8)
For those of you that have reset your pillar puzzle to get the second candle, have you noticed a faint melody if you stand on the symbol? I don't remember hearing that from the first one. I haven't been able to check on it though, I don't see the first one in my Gahreesen anymore.
Edit:
I think we can also safely say that the glowing pillar head in the Bahro cavern is NOT an indication of whether there's a candle in the age. The same pillar (the same symbol on the floor) is still lit, and none of the others are. I figure its a bug.
Very small footnote: if you don't have the platform relto page, you cannot collect sparks. (Walking through the spark does not make a sound and doesn't flash the relto book icon.)

In case you were curious.

(I think you *can* if you have the relto page but it's turned off.)

The sparklies aren't really a blue flame, though. It doesn't look anything like fire.

I don't know who all has or hasn't read the books, but in the Book of Atrus, the glowing marbles were called fire marbles by Gehn. and they were used as a sort of lantern that didn't burn out. so maybe just maybe the sparklies and the blue flame are the same thing, that was after all how I took it.
