I suppose it's not as painful for the non-australians, but every time i hear it my ears bleed a little then i cry and roll up into a ball and convince myself i heard some other pronunciation.
It's just...so....why? why?

I was almost sure the entire world was aware we have our own language? Dunny is a word a certain slice of the population pie in Australia uses to describe a toilet...or more specifically one not located within the house.

As proud as i am, it's an ear-sore on the already decadent spoken English in Australia. The universe i love so much seems destined to make me upset.

Perhaps if you tried putting more of an accent on the "D" - DUH nee or DEH nee? I think of it as sounding more like "Denise" (Deh-neice) than "done" so it sounds like Deh-nee to me. Does that help, any?

I always thought "Dunny" sounded pretty stupid. Personally, Esher's version sounded the most...realistic, I guess. At least it has an accent.

I never use Dunny. It's just retarded. I always say "da'NEE". Although I guess that's kind of the same, huh?

Duck-knee makes RAWA cry.
Yeesha's pronunciation should be the most correct one, as far as I know.

It was called Dunny in MYST. The gamefiles as well as A's ponounciation. Could it be that it was a little joke with australian flavour? Atrus was "sitting" there because he "had to"! Somebody must have gotten a nice answer from RAWA at some point in LYST history.

Nope, in fact the pronunciation was changed to D'nee after they found out the whole Australian thing. ;)
Atrus' pronunciation can be justified on accounts of the fact that he learned to speak D'ni from Gehn and Anna, both of which had had limited exposure to the language prior to the fall and probably had a bit of an accent too. He only met living D'ni survivors some time after the events of Myst.

I prefer Eshers pronunciation - Duchchnee - with a chch grating sound as in the Scots word loch or the same sound that is common in so many German words - Ich, rechts, bauch.

Still, it's much easier to type it - D ' n i.

RAWA explains why it is wrong, and how apostrophes work in D'ni.

Wow you must have laughed at CYAN at finding out about the dunny. There he was. Stuck on the outhouse, waiting for a kind soul to bring a sheet or two of paper :-)
