Actually he did arrived on earth. And yes, he did visit Atrus later. But his first visit was 10 years after he fell into the fissure, and that was on earth- tomahna. So he never really visit him during "the book of d'ni" time (between riven and exile).

By the way, have you played any other game yet?

Really? try buying from amazon. I think it's the best place you can find the games. Play Riven, than Myst III Exile, and than Myst IV Revelation. If you are sure of it, play Myst V, though I didn't enjoy the game much, personally. If you are further interested (and it seems you do  ) read Myst the Book of Ti'ana, Myst the Book of Atrus, and Myst the Book of D'ni. There's also the 3D realtime remake for Myst, called realMyst, and the spinoff game Uru, which is in the D'ni world aswell, but less about atrus and his family, though I'll recommend waiting for the Open Source Uru.

I'm sure you can find these at amazon.com.

Although you say you've not played all of the games in the series, your question shows you've learned at least some of the lore :)

"The Stranger" is right... the stranger falls into the fissure at the end of Riven, the Sequel to Myst. (This shouldn't be a spoiler as you asked about this, specifically... right?) Atrus' reasoning for letting the stranger fall into the fissure is that it should lead back to where Atrus' MYST book originally fell.

But, Atrus did not realize that his book had fallen to Earth. If Atrus had known that, then he'd have known that his visitor was from the surface above, and that he or she could have returned home from D'ni by simply climbing up to the surface. And apparently in the week or so between the ending of Myst and the events of Riven, Atrus and his visitor did not realize this during any of their discussions. Of course, Atrus was very focused on his editing of the Riven descriptive book at the time, so perhaps that explains why.

Atrus probably figured out the connection after the destruction of Riven, as we now know some debris from Riven also landed on Earth, and this would have been readily apparent to Atrus the next time he journeyed to the surface. And at some point thereafter, he and the stranger met again.

As "The Stranger" mentioned, there are other games in the series that describe future meetings between Atrus and the stranger, and a few books as well. You might be able to find these items if you look at online stores, and sometimes in the bargain areas of retail stores.

* Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition. Features Myst Masterpiece Edition, Riven, and Myst III: Exile, on DVD. Published in 2003 by Ubisoft, in the United States.
* MYST The Collection. Features all five of the MYST series games. However, the version of Riven in this edition is on 5 CDs (like the original retail CD release). Published in 2006 by Ubisoft, in the United Kingdom and Europe.
* You can get all three of the original novels based on the Myst series in a single book, The Myst Reader, which was published in 2004.

So how did the stranger find atrus again to visit him, or was it the other way round?

We don't exactly know. When moving to tomahna (we know Atrus' family had 3 homes since Myst: Chroma'Agana- during MTBOD events, The Cleft- after MTBOD events, while building tomahna, and tomahna), Atrus probably found the riven objects around the desert and understood the fissure ends there. So he probably left a letter to the stranger inviting him, and the stranger found it and went there.

Um, between Myst and Riven both the Stranger and Atrus were stuck in that room in K'veer, weren't they? Myst and its associated Ages were the only place they could go. There wasn't any accessible way back to the surface. That was the impression I got, anyway. Otherwise Atrus could have walked back up to the city, or even to the Cleft.

True, they couldn't get out of K'veer. In the Book of D'ni Atrus takes a whole team with him to break through to enter the city.

The Stranger did help Atrus straighten things out with his sons, rescue Catherine(Ka'tryn? Did she give up on her original name?), and imprison Gehn, and he probably felt bad about dumping him into the fissure like that with no warning, so if he knew a way to reliably meet The Stranger without inadvertantly trapping him or having to toss him into a hole in reality to send him home, he'd probably want to see him again.

[edit]yes, well, once a certain number of blatant and obvious typos appear, it becomes inexcusable, doesn't it?[/edit]

Better still, had Atrus known that the Fissure led to the Cleft, he could have followed the Stranger there at the end of Riven. From there, he could have returned to D'ni... the other way. From the surface.

Katran. And yup, looks like it. She signs her notes as "Catherine". I think it's sweet, but that's another rant for another topic (or for a fanfiction that will be translated someday).
