I am running windows 8.1 and have Myst online, Uru live installed, and have been playing the game for a couple of months. I am at the end as far as I can go and have ordered the expansion pack "The Path of the Shell". While waiting (about 1½ weeks) for it to arrive I decided to log on and just look around Uru, but when I tried I get an error message "The program was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b)" This happens while it is checking for updates. I have tried all the solutions found online: reinstall NET framework; replace missing dll files, and several other suggestions, but nothing works?
What can I do to fix this?

There are no expansions for Myst Online.

"Path of the Shell" is an expansion for the offline version.

Thank you, I did not realize this. But it still doesn't explain why I can't go back into the game as it is. I am getting that error message nevertheless, and it would be nice to go back and explore.

Shorah Voyager and welcome to the forum. There was an update recently that has caused some minor log in issues for others. You might look over some of these recent threads to see if you can find an answer to your issue:

New Patcher Problem

Black screen of death while using Build 918.OpenUru#131

d3dx9_27.dll is missing

Good luck. Hope you can get back into the cavern quickly.

That error is almost always related to only having 64-bit versions of the DLLs installed. When updating the .NET Framework and DirectX you need to make sure that you also get the 32-bit versions even if you have 64-bit Windows, because Uru is a 32-bit application and can only link to 32-bit DLLs.

Wow, the solution after all was so very simple. Thank you Mc_Fife.
I downloaded the library file d3dx9_27.dll again, only this time in 32 bit. and my game is working great. I found it in both the system32 folder as well as the sysWOW64 folder; does that sound correct to everyone? I replaced each location; so far so good! :D

If you properly re-install DirectX 9 from the end user download on the Microsoft site then it should all get taken care of for you. If you manually copy on the DLLs then, yes, they need to go in both System32 and SysWOW64 - the one in System32 should be about 3.63MB while the one in SysWOW64 will be about 2.21MB - that's probably the only way to (easily) tell them apart.
