 Post subject: Modem reboot fixed login

I unplugged the modem and waited about 5 minutes. I plugged it back in and was able to login without the usual hour or so of failed login attempts.

It's not uncommon for modems/routers to have issues like this. I'm guessing that over time and use they can suffer a kind of "memory leak" that causes them to slow down or behave badly. Years ago, I used to have an ADSL modem that benefitted from a reboot every two weeks or so.

I can still get net 6s even if I reboot the modem. Now we use internet access from a neighbor with his permission. We get a lot less net 5s and net 6s.

Presumably your neighbour has a different ISP or at least a different level of account? Could be that there's a better "quality of service" on thier connection.
