I believe it's an unofficial rule not to post onto old threads, so I made a new post.

For the sign up for MOUla needing a cellphone, I just signed up for an account for another service and the choice was available to have them send an automated voice call(that work on a normal analogue phone), to give you the code. Thought it was worth mentioning.

It's up to Cyan whether they look into such things but I'll make a couple of comments on factors that I know played a part in choosing the current scheme:

The service that is used is cost-free at the level of usage that MOULa has - that's an important factor in terms of impact on the CavCon fund. Many other similar systems charge per message sent or some period fee based on volume of messages.

One of the main drivers was to have an ability to restrict permanently banned people (e.g. "griefers") from re-registering - a cellphone number is less disposable than an email address so gave better "identity" (in an abstract sense) of who the requester was. A landline phone isn't quite so good there as someone may have access to a home phone, perhaps several different numbers at work, pay phones, etc.

Since the present system allows any given cellphone number to be associated with (I think) up to five MOULa accounts, this means that if a griefer is banned for the behaviour of one avatar, then the other accounts can be readily identified and blocked, something that wasn't possible when only an email address was used as an identifier.

The current scheme isn't perfect, but it takes a lot of the load off Cyan in trying to deal with rogue accounts (we, as users, only see the tip of that iceberg).

Hmm...valid point about landlines.

At this point it's up to Cyan to take my suggestion or not.
