is the download of the game off of GameTap supposed to take very long?
looks like it's gonna take me the better part of any hour to download.
please tell me if i'm trippin or what.
also, i sure hope you just have to download this once, cause it sure is time-consuming....
thx

You don't download Uru Live through GameTap. Uru Live comes wits own download and update mechanism, and yes, you will regularly have to download additional content.

You're mixing beta up with the live release.

If momamia is referring to the download of Uru Prime from Gametap then it will take a long time to arrive. I have cable and most PC games take an hour or more to download while most arcade games take mere seconds. If my understanding is correct, when Uru Live comes out it will be available for download outside of Gametap, but it will still take a long time to download because of its size, and that there will be a separate download of Gametap itself that will take a while.

For Example: When I reformated my computer and downloaded Everquest II's updates for the last 18 months I had a 5 or 6 hour download even though I had preloaded the basic game from my DVDs! I expect that Uru LIve will have a much shorter download, but still a long one.

I downloaded Gametap and have been enjoying it. 'Specially when I found Adventure (old school). Now it seems like it crashes more often than it runs.

If I sign up for Game Tap now (Sept. 13 or 14), when does my 1 month free begin? Do I have a say in it or a choice? Can I begin it at the 1st month of Uru Live, or does it begin immediately?

I hope to get into beta soon & I'd rather not be paying $10 a month after 1 free month for really old games while I'm waiting for Uru Live. I don't plan to play the other games. The ones that interest me I already own.

Your free month starts the day you sign up. If you don't pay for the service after that, your account is canceled.

GameTap doesn't just have really old games. They also have games that are relatively new. And they are supporting several GameTap specific new games like Uru Live.

But I have found the best thing is that games designed to work on other gaming systems have been modified to work with my PC. This has opened up a whole new world of games for me.

And, since Microsoft doesn't support some of my oldest PC games, I was really pleased to be able to play them using the GameTap interface. They do still have some limitations, but at least they are playable again.

OT I know, but have a look at DOSBox.

Hummm... do they have the talkie version of "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis"? and oldies like that (from Sierra and LucasArt)? If they do, then I will enjoy GT...

While they have a considerable library of Sierra games (including a number of Prince of Persia titles, though that now belongs to Ubi...), I don't think they have a deal with Lucasarts yet, as Indy, The Dig, Grim Fandango, and the like aren't on the service. (yet)

In my experience, some games work better without DOSBox. It may fix some bugs in more complicated games, but if you can run without it, don't use it. The native Pseudo-DOS that XP runs has faster reaction times.
