The letters on the pillars are the same, but the symbols near the top are not... hmm...

 And there are hills in the background or a plateau. No, it is not the same column.

I'm losing ground here. The coin has two sides. Okay. I looked up the letters on the columns

r ih f

I'm not sure what that means. The columns are only similar in the letters that appear on them. The locales are not.

What am I missing? (all this flipping back and forth is making me touchy)

Okay. A stronger nudge. And I thought I was smart. sigh.

Okay. The solution is far simpler. :)

[Reveal] Spoiler: A strong nudge
The old photograph is in your hand. Not only the coins have two sides.

So, um, turn the photograph over?

Hmm... suspicious repeating words... but neither D'ni nor English. Definitely not German either. But there are a few other languages using the letter "ö"...

I have no idea what the language is, but the pattern is clear. I think the puzzle can be brute-forced.
left-left-right-right-up-down

If that doesn't work, just keep trying.
right-right-left-left-down-up
up-up-down-down-left-right and so forth.

Assuming no major impediments, such as a slow mechanism, it wouldn't take too long to find the combination.
I have no idea about the language.

[Reveal] Spoiler: I`ve got the KI messages, thanks for the help! Let`s see... up, up, down, down, left, right... oops, mistaken. Starting over: up, up, down, down, right, left. Hurrah! The old mechanism still works and the round rusty door opens.
Image
There is a small chamber inside with a shaft in the middle, some tubing and a gauge-like gadget in the wall. I peer into the narrow shaft: it seems bottomless. A few blue lights and the endless ladder, that`s all. Is it only a service shaft of some kind or an underground maze is down there? The realm of underground Minkata waiting for exploring? Primitive aborigines on the surface and D'ni technology in the abyss? Maybe we should risk the descent.
