My sketchbook has been full of Book of Ti'ana/D'ni sketches recently, so I'm posting my first batch.

There's (obviously) a fair bit of reference when it comes to D'ni architectural aesthetics, but far less material to draw from that shows the people and clothing the wore during the city's glory days. Playing off the right angles and strong vertical elements seen in some of the paintings and buildings, I'm trying to establish my own interpretation of D'ni style sensibilities. Which, as of right now, means lots of long lines and lots of buttons. :)

The drawings towards the right are more specifically for Veovis, but the three on the left aren't meant to be anyone in particular.

Nice work. Thanks.

I've always gotten the impression that Myst style was similar to the steampunk we see in other places. Clothes tend to have a 19th century look, IMO.

RAWA is still around. You might talk with him to find out what look Cyan was trying for. I think there is little to guide you and that may be a good thing.

In the past when fans have created a popular ...anything... Cyan some times adopted it or was influenced by it. Not always but some times. So, you might be able to define the style. Making the sketches available in the community could influence age builders and story tellers to use them for their work.

Whatever you choose to do... thanks for sharing the sketches.

That's fantastic reference, thanks for that- I have screenshots from the game, but it's neat having full-on photos by the costume designer himself. :)

Oh, very nice! I, for one, love the Victorian Steampunk look. Thanks for that link, MystRiven. We know so little about the Guild of Healers, and I've often wondered how their guild attire would look.

Yeah, pokemon, I think you're the only one. :P

Shoom'lah, your work is impressive, as usual. I especially love that Maintainer's suit, and Veovis's costume. :D

Wow! Those designs look amazing!

I especially like Veovis' costume. I'm a sucker for a man in a coat like that.

Those are some pretty nice sketches, and good concepts. The small sketches next to Veovis have me thinking about how interesting the outfits of young Aitrus and his guildmates must have been... something dignified enough for a guildsman yet practical enough for someone to do that sort of exploring and excavating... it must strike a pretty odd balance, especially for the guild masters of those more hands-on fields.

The only one I'm a bit put off by is that maintainer's suit (and I've always been fairly put off by the concept of those suits anyway, so it might just be that). Looks a bit too much like a robot but that might be unavoidable. If that's a helmet, I wonder if it's a bit impractically tight-fitting around the head, but I don't know

Location: um... how did i get here..?
/me thinks the maintainer suits were more akin to "space suits" imo
underground, the d'ni had little use for space walks, but the maintainer suits protected them from an otherwise unliveable environment in a similar fashion albeit far more advanced than today's spacesuits

steampunk is the visual genre that best suits the myst serries though it's tough to peg down. to me, the d'ni attier has always seemed constricting to me. when reading the novels, i feel closterphopic when reading the descriptions of d'ni clothing. it seemed to be because of the environment they lived in. lots of hard rock (caves are hazardous to exposed skin) tall boots, bulky leather and hard, tough fabrics, lots of layers (shirts, vests, jackets and overcoats) mabey even gloves. of course, like all of d'ni designs, clothing could be expected to be stylisticly ornate. but, i get a strong impression of the bulky, constricting nature of the clothes, perhaps that's just me. particularly in Riven, cho and gehn's attire seems to be quite constricting (note their long overcoats, and cho's heavy looking helmet) atrus and catherine have been known to wear tunics primarily but atrus has been seen with an overcoat similar to gehn's as well.

when designing for steampunk, it's easy to design for victorian fashions as well. i kinda like that idea, if in moderation, i'm not sure if it would fit, rly; but it's a good stylistic choice but one common to the steampunk genre. myst is more than just steampunk imo.

the d'ni also seem to go with natural colors (mostly shades of brown and grey) yeesha's clothing has a sort of tribal look to it, but that may be due to her association with the bahro and little in the way of d'ni influence.

personally, i think those sketches are well on target; quite akin to what i'd imagine their clothing would resemble. the problem is, the book of ti'anna is the only entry in the myst serries to take place durring the time of d'ni. as far as clothing goes, we only have a few brief glimpses of what we have seen in the games or read in the novels. only four articles of wearable d'ni clothing appear in the games, and only two of which appears in Myst Online (that i can count offhand) in CC, we have catherine and atrus's tunics, yeesha's shirt, and the watcher's clothing found at the end of ahnonay in CC. two tunics and two heavily stylized shirts (mulitple fabrics, stitches up the sleeves, embroidery and cloths cut at odd angles) so, there's not much to go on in terms of reference material.

oh, and perhaps you might draw that lovely lady with a smile? she looks a lil uptight :)
