We'd like to share an exciting project we hope Myst fans will enjoy. It is a new Virtual Reality Adventure experience by one of the developers of Riven.

Ethereon is a highly immersive VR adventure filled with novel, puzzle-based interactions that are designed to take full advantage of the upcoming VR revolution.

Immerse yourself into the oneiric world of Ethereon and unlock the hidden secrets of this otherworldly realm through a series of carefully-designed puzzles that are both rewarding and fun!

This looks and sounds indeed gorgeous, and what an awesome and impressive developer team besides the one, Tony Davidson, formerly intensely involved with Cyan, and you, ishkur, must be precious Scotty, hihi, Scott Martin, as of your signature description ... Welcome to the Uru/Myst community ... :D

So, all you virtual reality/OculusRift/Morpheus fans out there, here's something for you, and as many key developers and many prominent voices on the subject and in that scene say, this might be a trailblazer or the cutting edge of the mysterious, adventurous rift experience with a stunning atmosphere and challenging puzzles etc. etc., just everything that made Myst and Riven what is was and still is for many ... 8)

Here are just two quotes I've read of folks on the Innervision VR website that played the demo for the Oculus Rift DK2 of Ethereon:
Quote:
WOW! Someone come and get me when I'm Finished. as I'm sure to get lost in here..... This is by far the most realistic RIFT experience So Far!!! Thank you for bringing back that feeling of Heaven I first got when I saw MYST
Quote:
This was such a great experience! It gave me wonder and it was just so peaceful and beautiful. Myst-style exploration and puzzle games will get a new life in VR. It really feels like you are transported in this alien magical world. My only criticism? It was too short! :)

I myself don't have an OR and don't intend to get one (yet lol), but I love great, stunningly beautiful, magical and mysterious virtual worlds, of course (hey, I'm here lol), and so I've downloaded the demo for PC, but unfortunately I couldn't get my mouse to grab that orb thingy lol, so I couldn't move on, but no probs, I've watched the demo on YouTube, this one is the best, the others show two pictures, of course, just as you see them in the PC version.

Yeah, everyone, all interested in sth like this might want to check out the Kickstarter page and the demo and maybe even pledge and support this awesomeness ... and in general I wish you, dear ishkur and the whole developer team around 'Innervision VR' much much and more fun and great ideas and magical and supernatural inspirations further on and all the success and support you might resp. will need to be capable of transferring this all onto the screen of our outer reality and making this all explorable and enjoyable for all of us ... :D

Ishkur, you might also want to post this in the Creativity or Off-Topic section on the new Cyan forums btw, where you can use just the same pw and username you're using here ... :)

Can you describe which object you are trying to interact with or describe the location?

YW, ishkur ... and I mean that blue pillar in the very beginning with that golden framed orb on it ... ok, it just looks like an orb initially, it is more like a lens, and one has to take it away so that a passageway or portal will be opened and later in the demo one has to do that again to proceed ... :P

Hey janaba, sounds like you might be playing the DK2 demo on the PC. If you don't have an Oculus Rift headset for that, then you won't be able to grab the object because you need the headset to look down at it first. Have you tried the PC demo?

There are 2 demos.
One is the DK2 demo of the Aquatic Realm,
and the other is a PC demo for The Gateway.

I'm glad that I've tried it again, I've downloaded the PC version, a 32bit version from the Kickstarter page, which is of course completely different, means no two screens lol and it is very different, a totally different gorgeous environment, the pyramidal structures one can see on your website, and it is absolutely awesome and just ethereal ... :P

I just couldn't figure out by now what I'm supposed to do or to discover ... I've taken several screenshots, observed everything carefully, but nothing happened or changed e.g. when walking onto that golden structure (the sundial) or so ... maybe I need to take more time and observe more closely, it is 0:44 am here already lol, so I'm just glad that I've at least downloaded and checked it again ... 8)

Ahh, I'd like to mention that I've downloaded the Windows 64bit version on your website before, unfortunately I've deleted it already, but maybe that's a wrong file as it seems I've had the OR version, it was also bigger, it had 159 Mb and this one now has 146 Mb ...

Yeah, however it is absolutely breathtaking and just what you expect in an oneiric otherworldly realm ... :D

I tried the PC demo. It's lovely, in an abstract geometry sense, but lacks something i-don't-know-what to make it feel more real -- perhaps that's what the VR will bring to the experience. I like using keyboard keys to move my "body" while using the mouse to look around, which feels natural, but I do miss a hand cursor for interacting with objects. I missed the visual feedback to tell me when an object can be touched, and I wasn't certain how accurately to place the camera when clicking on an object did nothing. As for the demo, I moved a gold lever, but it just ratched back into place and affected nothing else in the environment. I'm not sure how far the demo can be played beyond that.

I found the PC demo visually excellent but hard to control.

I hate the control system that requires you to have one hand on keyboard and one on the mouse all the time. I'd much prefer to have all movement controls bound to the mouse. Response to the controls was inconsistent for me, sometimes very sluggish, depending on what else was in view.

I agree about a need for some indication of when you have got hold of something, and when you've let it go again. Moving held objects around by moving your head is also a bit odd.

Yes, there is a lot more gameplay in the demo than just grabbing that lever.

[Reveal] Spoiler:
for a start, you can move it in other ways than by grabbing it

Thank you AlanD and catherwood for trying the demo, and for the feedback! Both 'The Gateway' (PC demo) and 'Aquatic Realm' (DK2 demo) are still in development. We are working with Nimble VR to include hand presence and working with Virtuix Omni for movement. We want to support several devices that will enhance the experience and give users more options. Ethereon was originally designed for VR. As we convert more of Ethereon to PC, it is this kind of feedback that is very helpful, so thank you for the detailed reply.

The experience in the DK2 is amazing! We are getting feedback from Rift users that Ethereon is one of the most visually pleasing and immersive experiences they have tried. It is very exciting to read what people are saying!

@AlanD - yes, there is a lot more to the demo after moving the pins. I don't want to give too much away, but if you'd like you can check out gameplay footage of the 'The Gateway' here: (spoiler alert!)

Tony and I have many updates on the project. Please check them out and let us know what you think! If you'd like to see this game come alive, and be part of the development, please share the KS link with other adventure game and VR fans!
