Like Yali said, the prison book logo does have some hint of bird-iness to it (two side profiles and a tail, maybe?), but I think the "desert bird" was always specifically Yeesha, who has that imagery in her own mandala from Uru.

As a thought experiment, what do you all think a conceptual Atrus Family crest might include? The five-petaled flowers of his childhood, the cleft, maybe an influence of Riven, perhaps some symmetry of three within five representing his children, definitely something representing Catherine and her dream-ages...? Likely some text in D'ni, whether names or the "family motto"?

Looks like monkey legs to me

Mre seriously, since it was on the door to the prison Ages chamber and it has two dots around the central one, perhaps each ‘leg’, or the whole design, is/incorporates a D’ni symbol for ‘danger’ or ‘prison’; something like the biohazard symbol.

It could also be argued that Gehn’s crest might be in fact Atrus’ family crest (or more likely a Guild symbol).

Kohdi and all, here you'll find a picture where you can clearly see that it might be a bird rather than anything else, it looks like a beautiful mechanical bird ... I don't know if that's an official one, but we don't know this of the one by Vector Cramp too, unless anyone would really know it ... :D

The one I linked to on MYSTAges is from Myst IV, so it's official. (It's seen in the intro)

I'm definitely seeing the bird in that new link Janaba, it differentiates a lot more between the two outer circle "nodes" so that the bottom one becomes talons, and the upper/right becomes a head... Interesting. Almost roadrunner in shape. You may have turned me on that theory. And Tweek, that's a remarkable likeness of Elvis on your toast, have you considered having it appraised?

Objection! That toast looks more like Ray Dorset.

So, back to the desert bird imagery? Geococcyx californianus? Acceleratii incredibilis?

To be fair, a piece of toast isn't something designed by an artist, and made with the intent for it to be a symbol or represent a concept. It's not supposed to look like anything else.

When a person actually creates an abstract artwork... sometimes it is intended to invoke or remind one, of something. As like as not, that image could be identifiable... as something relevant in the Myst world.

I played URU for a year before I realized the "abstract pattern" on Yeesha's shirt was supposed to be a bird.

The D'ni (and especially Atrus) don't seem to me to be the kind of culture which would appreciate abstract art, at least in the way we have come to stereotype it, with paintings of solid lines selling for preposterous amounts. Their architecture, language, and decorations all seem to have a stylized purpose or structure, whether naturalistic or geometric. Certainly they appreciate abstractions, for example the "icons" for destinations around Ae'gura, the architecture meant to invoke the forms of natural flowing stone in a cavern, and their calligraphic letters which are systemic with a rigid set of permutated geometric shapes used as numbers. Purpose is foremost in everything the D'ni did, as living in a cavern requires restraint on excess (Ri'neref was a wise man), which breeds creativity and invention. So, to me at least, if a symbol is used it absolutely has a meaning past "I wiggled a pen around and made this shape."

And Korovev, very clever Latin
