I had to do some research to figure it out. I've never been to the west coast. I started by looking for cities that had mountains in the background. Actually it was City Hall tower that gave it away. I was wondering what the white pointy building was. Thanks for telling me what its called.

When you watch a movie or TV show, keep an eye out for it. It's been shown in a lot of them, both as interior and exterior shots. It's even been used to fake locations in other cities -- including the inside of the White House in "West Wing". In 2006, over 50 different movies or shows did location shooting there. If you watch enough shows, you'll probably see it many times even if you don't realize you have. Here's a short list of some of the shows and movies it's appeared in. It's just a few of very many.

"Mission Impossible III."
"Evan Almighty."
"National Treasure: Book of Secrets."
"Nancy Drew."
"Mobsters."
"The Thorn Birds."
"Alias."
"The West Wing."
"Liar Liar."
"Chinatown."
"Shaggy Dog."
"The War of the Worlds."
"XXX: State of the Union."
"The Naked Gun."
"Fracture."
"Flags of Our Fathers."

Did you create the background image for Rūā? I really like it. Looks like something you would have made. It's well done :)

Yes. It's a circle with a rough chrome overlay that I blurred. The reflection image is an amusement park building with a lot of yellowish lights on it, which I didn't want to be recognizable. I found the symbol for route using Google, and added a chrome overlay on that, and then put a drop shadow under it to make it pop. I probably could have made the symbol too, but hey, it was there. :D

I honestly think that was my favorite part. Since that symbol is so widely used, it really helps tie into the word. It's a perfect pair!

I have to thank you for doing this (if I haven't already) because it's beautiful, and I have no D'ni langauge knowledge what-so-ever. It's like a children's story book in a way. All the beautiful pictures that you pair to their matching word. Love it!

Now if I could just figure out a way to illustrate verbs, adverbs, and adjectives...!

I could imagine you doing at least some verbs. Like if you have the D'ni word for "jump," you could just find a person jumping. Or, you could use the avies in MOULa and take some pictures of them dancing, walking, waving, etc. Those could then be your background images, and you don't have to worry about copyright.

One of the words I skipped was bērē, which is a verb meaning to maintain. I was just thinking of how that word sounds, and my current sleepiness led my thoughts in strange directions.

In D'ni, a member of the guild of maintainers is usually called a bērētan, which translates as maintainer. However, it would be just as valid to say bērēam, which is a shortened form of "maintainer guildsman" (bērētan telam), although the gender-neutral telrov, meaning guildperson, is used more often.

And with that long-winded explanation, the story it was leading up to is that my sleepy musing took me to thinking that in English, a beery man is a person who is rarely capable of maintaining anything other than a state of inebriation. :)

Minor quibble - it should be telbeereeam for "member of the guild of maintainers", on the model of telookam.

1. An index would be nice :) .

2. You might want to point out the distinction between gel (ordinary write, cf. Regeltavok Úrpa) and sel (Write Ages, cf. seltan).

Fair enough. I skipped over gel earlier for some reason or other that escapes me now. Probably because it's a verb.

An index? Tell me how to illustrate one, and I'll do it. ;)

Preemptively answering a couple of questions that might arise from the illustration for senaren:

Yes, I chose that picture because it has a very D'ni feeling in the design. There are book symbols in various places on the outside, just like they might have done, and the tile portrait over the door appears to be a man with a book in one hand and a pen(?) in the other. It isn't apparent due to the cropping I did to make it fit, but most of the structure is inside the rock of the cliff it's set against, which is also a very D'ni thing to do.

No, I do not know where it comes from or what it was made for. I should have checked, but I was sifting through hundreds of images looking for one that fit the word. It just didn't occur to me to check the details at the time.

I think korovev means something like this:

Abtsē - basalt rock
Ano - water
Anotam - lava
and
basalt rock - Abtsē
lava - Anotam
water - Ano

That's a little more laborious than I want to take on just now; I'm not only doing these illustrations, I'm also editing a new version of the D'ni dictionary for my web site. Oh, and there's that pesky "real life" and "work" jazz I do on the side.

If anyone else wants to take on the task of making that list, I'll be happy to import it into my first post in the topic.

You're right, it's a lot of work. Maybe I'll do a little at a time.
