I'm gonna go with Korovev on this. I think having just the D'ni word on the photo was nice and simple, where now you have words all over and they're a bit more distracting. The placement is good, but I feel like they take over and you then can't focus on the photo as well. Basically, the words are louder than the image, which if that's what you're going for, then it works, but I personally like to be able to see the image and have it in my face. That way I really get the idea of what the word means; I can see the representation well.

I thought about having a layout where I just had the translation:

(D'ni)
{image}
(translation)

But without the transcription, it doesn't work since most people won't be able to read the D'ni letters. The transcription is essential. Placing the transcription under the D'ni might work, but then I'd be covering up more of the illustration, which is what the new layout is intended to avoid. This layout just takes the sentence I'd been using in the commentary and moves it onto the image in an area where I won't be covering up the central image.

The general idea was to make the illustration more visible, and keep the commentary if the image is copied into a different place where the text would be lost. But maybe that doesn't work the way I hoped it would?

I prefer the original layout design, Larry - it feels to me to have more gravitas and authority.

Hmm. I'll give the less cluttered approach one more try. How's this look?

It looks better, but I think I still like the original way. But, why don't you give this a shot on a few more images? That way we can get the feel for how this would look not only on this photo, but multiple images. That way we could really judge if it's working or not. But I do like this approach a lot better than your first one.

That's easy enough to do. I'll give you two; one that's just a texture and one with a complex image. Here y'go.

I really like how the layout works on the tree photo specifically. Now I'm one person, but I think it seems to work well on all three of the photos, now that I've seen them in a group. I feel like it flows well together and that you can see the picture and the text equally.

I like the new layout. I think having the translation on the image works better. At least for me anyway.

The clean style is good and it's easier to read but I'm somehow reminded of lapel badges.

Maybe a border around the outside edge would eliminate the lapel badge look.

Hmm. Maybe a ring with the translation on it? Guess I'll try that a little later.

Edit: I'm trying out a chromed silver ring. It'll show up on the word I'll be uploading tomorrow.

I like the ring. It creates a form of separation. Also, the definition fits perfectly on the ring! Maybe for each photo, you could, and I imagine you will, do a ring that fits the color scheme of the photo.

I really like the way it turned out! Putting the translation on the ring was a great idea. The metal effect really adds to the design. Can't wait to see more!

Okay. I'll retrofit it to the other words I've done to see how it works.

On arotan:

There is b’ar, which has been translated as “go”, “do” or more to the point, “enter”, so ar-o-tan might be “one who enter (a group or community)”.

Alternatively, the literal translation might be “outlier”, unrelated to b’ar.
