Guilds… governments… it is surprising how few people demonstrate an understanding from where guilds/governments draw their authority. So, it is not surprising many have no idea how guilds or fan clubs work. Critical thinking seems to be a lost art.

We now have several examples of Myst fans coming together and forming clubs, which they have chosen to label guilds. Many players confuse the fan created and run guilds with the Cyan created IC story guilds about the ancient guilds populated by the D’ni and the Cyan created RESTORED IC guilds of Uru Live populated by staff and players with the fan created guilds, if they are even aware of the distinction. (Reference)

The structure of most fan guilds has been some group structure of people in charge of something that are democratically elected people designed in an attempt to be fair. From that point on most of the drama in the guilds has been about who gets to do what, who tells who how whatever will be done or can’t be done, and what is and is not fair to others. The guilds in general never engaged in any of those activities but that did not reduce the drama or seem to matter to those complaining.

People seem to forget that governments and life are not about fairness. It is the radical revolutionaries and especially would be dictators that promote the ideas of fairness, something impossible to achieve in eyes of all evolved. Revolutionaries like it as it leads to unending dissatisfaction and argument.

Rational people long ago figured out why pure democracies fail and moved to republican forms of government with elected representatives that argue the merits of ideas in an attempt to create the most freedom and justice for individuals. The rational and intelligent people realized that fairness is such a complex, arbitrary, and situation dependent concept that it is impossible for all to agree on what is fair. A wrongful death lawsuit can never be fair, but it can be just.

The core purpose of representatives in a republic is to consider with great care what authority will be taken from individuals and given to the government and how the government will be allowed to enforce that authority. I think too many people believe authority and permission comes from the governments to the people, just upside down. That thinking seems to transfer to fans ideas of what the guilds are and how they have some type of authority, which the guilds don’t have. They certainly have no way to enforce anything.

Whilyam seems to think the laissez-faire structure of the GoW is the ideal for all guilds… ignoring the written and posted structure of the organization because they are not actually used or enforced, which I suppose is reasonable.

But, Whilyam, in his revisits, ignores the aspects of the laissez-faire concept of minimum necessary involvement for peace and rights of individuals. He goes on to ignore how the various guilds have conducted their activities or put in context the scale of fan acceptance or rejection. It seems there is always a minority of fans that peddle their sour grapes for guilds because things are not done to THEIR satisfaction. All guilds have to deal with that to some extent. Many of us have experience with guilds, complainers, those with great ideas, and reformers. Many of us have formed our opinions of guilds and guild leaders based on actual experience while others have formed opinions based on what they have been told/read.

I think most of the drama around guilds comes from people believing what they read about the guilds without bothering to get the facts or personal experience and misunderstanding what the guilds are.
