Does OSMO need to update the linking effect?

Compared to the effects in the Myst games, Uru's linking effect is kinda pedestrian, what with the simple fading of the avatar. Then again, the simplicity of it holds a certain charm in my opinion. I don't know. Who thinks we need to change the linking effect for OSMO, perhaps to resemble the effect in one of the games? (Funny how each game portrays it differently). If you answer yes, then please tell me what you want the effect to be.

For a quick reference:

Myst: You fade away, and your image distorts into the linking panel as you do.

Riven: You dissolve into glowing particles, which fade away.

Exile: A golden glow passes over you, starting at the hand, and you vanish, with the last few particles of gold light shooting into the linking panel.

Revelation: Effect is only seen once, at a distance, where it looks like a sort of orange, glowing flame shoots down your body, disintegrating it.

realMYST: Entire body glows brightly, then fades.

Personally, if it had to be changed, I would want the effect from Riven or realMYST.

What do you think? Keep it the way it is? Change it to one of these? Or something else?

Um, there are no "bodies" in the other games :lol: LOL! I personally think the current linking is good. I voted to leave it alone.

I always thought that the linking effect in Uru should use something similar to the dissolve/disintegrate effect that is used for the pillars in the Bahro caves, but with a shorter particle life.

It's a free for all, remember- people don't have to consent on one linking effect. Any age could potentially modify the linking effect- people could use any effects from the older games (they'd have the render them, of course) or anything else they can render- your character throws down a smoke bomb and is gone when it clears, h they play gnarly guitar solo and burst into flames, completely freaking anything.

I don't think that is correct. The linking animation is something that is part of the game engine itself, not the Age. I don't know enough about how the engine works to say whether that could be overridden or not, but I'm fairly certain that in its current state an Age cannot provide extra character animations/effects.

I assume you mean in MYST and realMYST. However there is a time in both games where you see the linking process, and that's when Atrus links out and back.

I'd love to see the linking effects from Exile or Revelation. It's not a high priority, but it could certainly be someone's project.

Obviously they are sentient beings who just happen to follow you around (without touching you) and who can operate a linking book from afar :wink: They just have slower reflexes than you.

Anyway, the realMYST effect sounds cool, as does the Riven. Exile's and Revelation's are a little flashy for me, and Myst's is just odd.

Exile's effect is like Riven's, just.. cooler. Lot's of golden stuff.

Also Exile's linking sound is sort of a mix between Riven's and Myst's.

If I was to hazard a guess, I would say the link in/out effect is an animation in the avatar files. That said, I would assume that altering the link in to look like what ever we want is at least technically feasible. (Assuming of course the avatar files are shared with us.) The trickier question is what happens when your in a crowded room and someone likes out in full view. Do 13 clients crash at the same time? Just a thought.

Well, could it be a clientside thing so that you can just alter the linking animation to show up on your computer as whatever you want it to be?

It wouldn't offer different animations for different ages, but it could let those who want a new animation to have it while the ones who don't want it can keep the old animation. When someone links out, they could just see themselves fading away, while to someone else with a modified animation, it looks like they're disappearing a la Exile.

Hmm... I'm liking the "guitar solo and burst into flames" idea. :lol:

That would be beyond epic. Epic in the internet-meme sense. 8)
