Dissapointing. Took a read through their article on MMORPGs and not a single mention. Nothing but 'hack & slash' type games.

I guess they don't think the world is ready for peaceful explorers. :P

Uru isn't an RPG :P

U - R - U; you don't play as someone else, you play as yourself.

Uru is also unique in its use of the Adventure Genre as an MMOG. In many ways, it will never be considered an MMORPG for that reason.

Except for those people who don't play themselves.

You know, sometimes I just want to smack Rand in the head for canonizing the whole "you are you" thing... :P

You must admit it sounds a lot snappier than "You are you by default, although if you like, you can be someone else." ;)

How about "You can be you"?

Agreed, originally the U-R-U thing was just an amusing side effect of the name, but Rand later started using it to mean You Are You.

Cept it's not true, people play themselves, but they also play other people. And yes technically Uru is an RPG.

Eh. It doesn't fit to the "conventions" of the RPG genre, and any attempt to expand the definition (or take "role-playing game" at face value) to include Uru... would probably result in a definition of RPG that includes almost all video games.

What's wrong with just calling it an MMOAG? (or MMOARG, as someone once coined it)

Also, I'd venture a guess that whoever wrote that article simply hasn't heard of Uru. Most people haven't. :(

If you take RPG to mean "medieval-fantasy game based on skills, hit points, fighting and magic" then no, Uru isn't one. If you use the old tabletop definition then yes it is: it's a game where you play a role (explorer of a lost civilization) in a setting where the story is in part influenced by your decisions and actions.

That's what I think it ought to be called, but since it's the only (notable) one of its kind, people simply haven't used the term yet.

I'll have to sharply disagree with Tweek: Uru is not an RPG. Ian Atrus is right that it could be considered one if you took the words "role-playing game" literally, but as he also acknowledges, that is not the common connotation of RPGs.

Since tabletop RPGs and computer game RPGs have only the name in common and are mostly different in every other respect, it's more a question of what crowd you're asking than of common and non-common.

Yes I guess in that respect you are correct, I however take RPG to mean Role Playing Game in the literal sense of the words.

They need to rename Uru to clarify all these questions.

How about this...

"U-R-U Unless You Don't Want to Be You, In Which Case You Can be Someone Else. But That Doesn't Make URU an RPG, Unless of Course That Means Role-Playing in the Strictest Sense, in Which Case it IS."
