Well, it becomes pretty clear with programs like 'Eviebot', and apparently Tay as well... that all these programs can do is repeat what is said to them without any real understanding.

Yeah, I think it's misleading to call these things "AI" - they're really "semantic engines" that follow a set of fixed rules about how to react to input and add some things extracted from that to a library; they don't really "learn" anything from the interactions, just add to the canned responses they can use without knowing what those responses represent.

How do you know it's not true?

"I think, therefore I am... I think."
"Of course you are, my bright little star! I've miles and miles of files, pretty files..."
--Moody Blues

In the early 1980s there was a CP/M program called Eliza that was derived from a mainframe experiment. The program emulated a psychotherapist. The people who wrote it were astounded not long after it was introduced, when people started unburdening their souls to this basic mirror.

I read the story about Microsoft and was amazed by their naivete. Mac is right. None of this is "AI." It's people trying to figure out how to take advantage of other people by "inviting" them into ever-shallower means of simulated communication. Anyone who has spent a minute or two perusing comments on any unmoderated forum knows how quickly the exchanges turn toxic.

I doubt that AI will ever be more than a very dull tool, except, perhaps, in some very narrowly defined fields of specific knowledge. Human beings are truly designed to think deeply, but it takes time and effort to learn how.

Many humans do not think deeply at all.

And we are not 'designed' to fly, yet we have people in space.

Where Eliza was a mirror to an individual, Microsoft's Tay was a mirror of the internet.

IMO, it would be accurate to refer to all these types of "AI" as mirrors. Garbage in, garbage out.

At least Microsoft didn’t hook Tay to 4chan  .

It should be pointed out that well designed chatbots can in fact fool quite a few people. The problem is that the Turing test was never meant to be an actual, formal measure of intelligence, and it assumes an AI would behave like a human, which is not necessarily the case. Computers can in fact learn (e.g. spam filters), but again that’s not necessarily the same process as human learning.

I know it's offtopic even for the trash, but..

Sometimes you just take a deep breath and say, "It's good to be back."

Lol, some people start new threads to say they're back, so your post is uber discreet relatively speaking.

Welcome home, Alhon!

lol, well, I'm not a mean person/people, so I prefer just being quiet about stuff. But figured I'd pop my head back into the forums since I reinstalled MOUL last night for the first time in... oof. A few years, at least.

Go figure, entirely for cosplay research purposes. But still, I've noticed in "speedrunning" through the four ages... I'm still taking extra time to grab every Bahro stone and Relto page. Guess once it's in your blood it never leaves. :P
