I posted this a few days ago. I want to pass it around some more (although no particular purposes is expressed or implied... I'm not jumping into implementation right now, I can tell you that). I guess I just want to judge interest levels out in the Myst world.

One-line summary: An all-text Myst MUD would not be MOUL, but it would sure be a lot easier to implement. Age-writing tool: a text editor! This is not a traditional MUD; I think it is possible to import the Twine ease-of-use revolution into the multiuser domain.

(Yes, I am a text adventure guy. This is not a parser-based model, however.)

Have you looked at Dio?

See dio.com - It is still in Beta. Several people have done MUD like things there.

You can see where Milo Ferp started Colossal Cave. I suggest you watch there intro video before trying to play or build anything.

I did look at Dio (it's mentioned in my first post) but I haven't tried it yet. But, as I said, I want to focus on text.

(Translating Colossal Cave is exactly the wrong example, since that's inherently a parser-based puzzle game and cannot meaningfully be separated from the command line.)

Ever so long ago, when there were NO graphics whatsoever,
(I know very few of you remember that, or even CAN remember it!)

...we played "Calisto Island" -all in text.

Further messing around has generated a couple of prototypes -- one for UI, one for functionality.

(Thanks to David Given for the second one.)

I know this post didn't get a lot of interest, but I am working on the project anyhow.

http://seltani.net/ (only a teaser right now!)

I have posted some more details on the GoW forum. The software is progressing nicely. As the teaser implies, I have a Cavern area and a Surface area. I can link back and forth, walk around each, look at the scenery, and (if I log in with two web browsers) chat between characters.

Still a long way to go before I can open it up to testing, but this is a possible project.

I didn't catch this when you first posted it, but I played the demo and it does sound like a fun project! I think the UruObsession website used to have a parser based mmo based around the myst universe that people could play for free and add stuff to, but I never got around to looking at it to see what it was like to play.

Anywho, good luck with this!

It would be awesome if you could add multiplayer support.

I got *that* working two weeks ago. :) Chat works, seeing people walk in and out works. No buddy lists yet.

The next big step is scripting. You can only walk around and look at scenery, because there's no way to rig up buttons or levers or any kind of active puzzle script.

I have a scripting plan worked out, and I will dive into it on Monday. I don't expect to *finish* it next week, but hopefully there will be enough done to demo a couple of simple worlds.
