It does look like a dagger, but may I ask why it appears that the edges of the blade is bent towards the center.
It looks more like a tool of some sort, maybe splicing rope or cable.
I am still looking everywhere and asking around.

It is quite a mystery, and we must solve it.

the blade isn't really bent down toward the center. thats more of an optical illusion from the picture. The reason i thought it was a bayonet originally was because the only time i've seen the shape of the blade is in Triangle Blades (which i've only seen in Bayonets.)

Did you buy it from the explorer living in Quebec who produced some crafty daggers some time ago? I do remember having seen a thread with such dagger. He made replicas of the rivenese daggers

Probably not...I bought one of those from this thread:

The handle looks interesting.

More pictures would help.

This is quite a dagger I must say. We need more clues.

Yes. I'm kinda starting to think this thing belongs on a Boat.

OMG.....It came with a box? Very cool.

Well, the idea about it splicing cable or rope is thrown out the window, in my opininion.

Thanks for the video. Great.

To me it looks fairly new or it was taken very good care of, since it is in it's own box.

I will search more. I have to know what this is.

What kind of metal is it. Looks like brass.
May have been a decoration for a wall in a nautical restaurant.

Someone out there must know what this is.

I can tell you right off the bat, this thing is very old... it has that smell of old. and its made of brass i believe, though it may be copper.

How long is it roughly? It looks quite long, most Arkansas Toothpicks measure 12 to 20 inches, about the length of one to two computer keyboards.

Perhaps if you can get some better pictures the Tin Eye image search engine may help. Get a friend with a digital camera to take photos of the thing against a neutral background (a grey cloth for instance) and a close-up of the symbol (which looked like a trademark or manufacturers logo from the brief flash in the video).

Some random thoughts:

If it is copper it will be very soft and not very useful. Bronze (copper+tin) and brass (copper+zinc) are more common as weapon or tool metals.

Bronze weapons were superseded by iron a very long time ago. The thing doesn't look that old. So it is a tool, or is simply ornamental.

The metal is presumably non-magnetic (test it with a magnet to be sure) so it may be designed for work in strong magnetic fields such as are found in some radar valves and microwave ovens, for instance.

Bronze and brass tools are also non-sparking so can be used in explosive atmospheres.

From the video, this is what I saw as the "logo":

Also, it may just have been the light but it looked like the blade had some tarnishing due to exposure to the air? If so that makes me think it's either pewter or silver plated - which would make it more ceremonial or ornamental than functional.

The size and blade shape are both pretty common in throwing knives.

its wa-aah-aah-y to heavy to be a throwing knife. I've owned a couple of the min the past, this thing has no balance--it can barely stand up right on the hilt.

edit: Also, there appears to be two different symbols on the thing... one on the blade which looks like the one i posted and one on the handle that looks like the one Mac posted.

That's interesting because they both use similar features even though they're different - I wonder if the '7'-like shape is significant in some way?

The lettering on the handle had the appearance of being "teaped" since they look slightly irregular - that might be a local term here, but teapes are individual letter or number punches that you hit with a mallet to make an impression on wood or metal often used to mark the owner of a tool. Usually, if you were doing a lot of marking or doing it to mark products for sale you'd get a punch made up with the entire stamp so you wouldn't get the irregularity - my dad was a joiner and cabinet maker and had a punch with his name for marking work (and his tools, which I mostly still have). I digress - it looked odd for it to have that uneven appearance - made me think it was a one-off or a sample.

I also wondered if the logo(s) had been stamped by combining several discrete symbols.
