The mind behind Braid just showed off gameplay footage at Sony's major press conference yesterday of a game that will definitely appeal to other puzzlers and it's clear it takes a great deal of inspiration from a certain lost island...

Indeed. I just hope that the trailer music isn't in much of the main game, else the Myst-like atmosphere would be broken. It's nice music though...

A former Cyan artist, Eric A. Anderson (aka, eaa, Grammar Cowboy, or for the real old timers, LemonLime) is a member of the core Witness team.

For what it's worth, Jon Blow's previous game -- Braid -- managed to draw deeply on its Super Mario inspirations while having a *really different* style of music. :)

I thought I recognized Eric's style. Thanks for that Zardoz. Makes me even more excited now :)

So the big question: When is this to be released?

They haven't given a precise release date yet, but they announced it would be released on the Playstation 4. And this one will be there at the end of the year ("holiday season 2013"). While this doesn't tell us anything precise regarding the PC version (or any other version), it would be surprising if it launched much sooner than that.

Another very interesting project ! Adventure/Puzzle/Myst-like games don't seem to be dead, finally…

I just came across this presentation given in March 2014 by one of the game's artists.
The Art of The Witness
It's only 22 minutes long, and you can easily skip to the section with a game trailer video (made for the Playstation announcement, so I'm not sure if it is the same one mentioned last year above).

The speaker in this presentation does say that the game will have only minimal enviromental sounds, no music.

The rest of the presentation gives a fascinating look into their design decisions. Their choice to use simplified impressionistic art style goes against my love of realistic environments, but I can understand how they think it enhances the gameplay.

Enjoy!

Oh, and here is their latest update, fresh as of today.

Just wanted to do a quick post saying that we are all working hard on the game, figuring out some of the last unknowns and polishing things up. We are definitely in finish-the-game mode...

Their "about" page says it is to be released in mid-2014.
