Ok - a silly question......

Can anyone tell me what a [Crawler] and what a [Bot] is? I found these "titles" in the Who is online section of the Board index page. Not every name had these titles - mine didn't - so I'm wondering what they mean and how one rates them.

Just wondering....

They're not people, but automated bots sent out by search engines to gather information.

"Crawler" is a generic term for any program (such as a robot or spider) used to automatically discover and scan websites by following links from one webpage to another. Google's main crawler is called Googlebot. https://support.google.com/webmasters/a ... 2072?hl=en

The reason that these "automated visitors" are specifically marked out in the who is online list is that the forum software treats them as a different kind of "user group" and what they get to "see" on the forum may be different from regular users depending on how the admins set the "Bot" privileges. Typically, they won't be allowed into any "private" sections, won't be allowed to submit posts or PMs and because they're not human they don't have to see any of the forum styling so it's not uncommon for them to be given a very basic forum layout that lets then find the content and links but uses minimal bandwidth.
