Well, not 100% free. But more free than previously for independent game makers. They are making a pretty awesome deal.

You can use the engine for free until your game’s sales reach US$3,000 per quarter. Then you owe a 5% royalty of your sales.

You pay no royalty for film projects, contracting and consulting projects such as architecture, simulation and visualization.

Quoting: “You can release any product that is allowed by law, with the exception of gambling applications and certain safety-critical control systems described in the EULA. You can release games, demos, VR projects, architectural showcases, films and more.

The announcement from Tim Sweeney yesterday can be found here: Unrealengine.com.

Yeah ain't that sweet.

I'm wondering what Unity3D will do with that bit of news. They better do something...

Once upon a time, Unity3D was about to become the default game engine because Unreal's astronomical pricing shut out any studio smaller than a small nation. Unity3D's pricing was free or nearly free in comparison with a highly functional free version and a paid "Pro" version with the good stuff on a per seat model. In response Epic changed their model for Unreral to be as affordable as Unity3D, but now Unreal is totally free and fully functional for everyone until you make money. As they say, their success depends upon yours. Verrry tempting. Unity3D needs to make a similar move to provide a fully functional engine without appearing to copycat Epic. It's a tough place to be in when facing startups who can't afford $1500 per seat and Unreal is just a click away.

Thats a bold move on Epic's part, I wonder where this is going to go...

Well, that answer is easy to find: http://unity3d.com/get-unity

(Unity Personal is now free, no royalties, all features, all platforms. Still has the splash screen.)

Well there ya go. A simple change to a fully functional product for free with a shift to the same per seat structure when revenue or funding is above $100k.

It looks like Source 2 will be free as well. Quite a nice list of engines to choose from if you're developing anything.

Is this the type of software used to create virtual tours of real locations, by processing lots of photos taken from different positions?

This is the type of software most often used for video games.

No. These are game engines. For example Uru runs on the plasma engine, Obduction will run on the Unreal 4 engine, realMyst Masterpiece 2014 runs on Unity engine, etc etc.

For more of an idea of what a game engine is here is a link.

I was hopeful that the unreal game engine could be used to turn photos into an explorable virtual tour, as was done with the CYAN game engine for URU. See these links.

http://fscsp.org/CQ6/index.html

What is the name of the kind of software that turns photos into an explorable virtual tour?

Does anyone know of links to such software.

A game engine like this *can* be used that way. But it's a lot of work.

The example you link to uses the Unity engine.

As I recall, the project did switch to a different engine. They did start out with CYAN software. I watched a demo in which URU was loaded. An avatar starts out in Relto and links to a real cave. Then the avatar walks through the cave. Fly mode was also used in this demo.

No... But, AutoDesk makes free software that turns a series of photos into a 3D model. Its named something like 123D...
